A THRONE IN HEAVEN / REVELATION 4:2-3

(KJV) Revelation 4:2-3

And immediately I was in the spirit: and behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne. 3 And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald.

A THRONE IN HEAVEN / REVELATION 4:2-3

The one seated on the throne is God the Father, and John is deeply and acutely aware of God’s presence. Yet, John does not attempt to describe God directly, for God’s glory is too great for words and beyond description. Since God “lives in unapproachable light” (1 Timothy 6:16), John can only speak of a diamond-like brilliance (the jasper in Revelation 21:11 is crystal clear) and a fiery presence. Carnelian stone was a brilliant red precious stone, symbolizing God’s redemption (spiritual salvation and restoration of people through the personal sacrifice of Christ).

AFTER THIS / REVELATION 4:1

(KJV) Revelation 4:1

After this I looked, and, behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter.

AFTER THIS / REVELATION 4:1

This phrase seems to indicate a passage of time. It appears that instead of one continuous vision, John was given insight into various times and events of the future (Revelation 7:1, 9; 15:5; 18:1). For this reason, we have this change of scene and time. Many Bible scholars and interpreters believe that at this point in Revelation (before the fulfillment of the events described from here forward), Christ has already taken the “overcomers” out of the world. Thus, the catching up of the true church to meet Christ in the air (John 14:3) takes place before the tribulation period (Revelation 6-18). This belief is based on the following statements:

  1. Beginning with Revelation 4:1, the terms “church” or “churches” no longer appear until Revelation 22:16.
  2. The bride of Christ (the church) appears in Revelation 19 already with Christ in heaven before He returns to earth to judge the wicked and to reign on earth for a thousand years, closing out time as we know it (Revelation 20:4).
  3. The promise given to the Philadelphia church to spare it from the time of worldwide trial pertains to all believers who stand true to Christ before the tribulation (Revelation 3:10).

He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

THE SPIRIT … THE CHURCHES / REVELATION 3:22

God’s people must continually recognize the relationship between the churches and the Holy Spirit and respond accordingly. Churches are under the authority not only of Christ as the Lord and Head of His church, but also of the Spirit of God. They must listen and respond to the voice of the Holy Spirit, particularly as He speaks through God’s inspired Word (2 Timothy 3:15-16; 1 Peter 1:24-25; 2 Peter 1:20-21). This distinction between the Spirit and the Churches can be expressed by the following Biblical truths. 

  1. The Holy Spirit is not owned by and does not belong to the churches or any human institution. He is the Spirit of God and of Christ, not the Spirit of the churches (Revelation 3:1-2). The Spirit remains free to come and leave according to God’s purposes and how people respond to God’s standard of truth and right conduct (John 1:33; John 7:39; John 14:17). 
  2. The Holy Spirit will remain with any church only as long as it remains faithful to Christ and His Word, listening and responding to what the Spirit says (Revelation 2:5; Revelation 2:16; Revelation 2:22-23; Revelation 3:3; Revelation3:15-16).

IF ANYONE HEARS MY VOICE / REVELATION 3:20

Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

IF ANYONE HEARS MY VOICE / REVELATION 3:20

This verse is often cited as an invitation for “unsaved” individuals who have yet to receive spiritual salvation and personal relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ. However, while that is a valid invitation, we must also keep in mind that Christ originally gave the message to a church whose people had neglected their relationship with Christ and were out of touch with Him. In its self-sufficient prosperity and worldliness (Revelation 3:15-16; Revelation 3:17-18), the church in Laodicea had excluded the Lord Jesus Christ from its congregations. Christ’s invitation, spoken from outside the door, is a request for renewed companionship with any individual who will turn from his or her own way and return to a devoted faith and renewed passion for Christ. Christ’s invitation is to sit down at the table with them (Revelation 3:21) and share spiritual nourishment. The Bible also speaks of a great “wedding supper” (Revelation 19:9) for Christ and His bride – the church. But only those who “eat” with Jesus now will eat with Him then.

YOU DO NOT REALIZE / REVELATION 3:17-18

(KJV) Revelation 3:17-18  

Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: 18 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.

YOU DO NOT REALIZE / REVELATION 3:17-18

The church’s outward prosperity had made the people blind to their deep spiritual need (Revelation 3:15-16).

  1. According to Jesus, the church people were, in reality, as “wretched” and “pitiful” as those in the society around them who did not know Christ. They were “blind” to their own spiritual condition and did not have the vision of how they could use their wealth and benefits to spread Christ’s message. They were “neked” in that they were no longer clothed with the power and purity of God, unable to see that their prosperity was not evidence of God’s blessing.
  2. Christ spoke directly to their source of pride and dependence on their own abilities and resources. 

(a) The city of Laodices was known for its wealth, but God told them they needed to be rich toward Him (Luke 12:21) with a true and tested spiritual wealth of faith that could not be corrupted and was worth far more than worldly riches (1 Peter 1:7). 

(b) The city had an extensive textile (material, clothing) industry, but Christ instructed them to put on His clothing of purity and right relationship with Him (Revelation 19:8). 

(c) The city also produced a famous eye salve or ointment, but only God could help them see their true condition and receive the clarity of sight that only comes from yielding to the guidance of the Holy Spirit and holding firm to God’s Word.

  1. In order to keep from becoming spiritually “lukewarm,” the church and its people today must constantly ask themselves: Have we taken God’s generous blessings for granted and allowed them to erode our desperate and personal passion for Jesus?

NEITHER COLD NOR HOT – LUKEWARM / REVELATION 3:15-16

(KJV) Revelation 3:15-16

I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. 16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.

NEITHER COLD NOR HOT – LUKEWARM / REVELATION 3:15-16

This describes the spiritual condition of the church in Laodicea. The city of Laodicea was a wealthy center of business and trade. The atmosphere of prosperity had led to spiritual laziness and unconcern in the church. They were no longer “hot” enough spiritually to recognize or respond to the Holy Spirit’s guidance; and they were not quite “cold” enough to realize their need to repent and return to dependence on God. 

  1. A lukewarm church is one that is apathetic and negligent about personal devotion to Christ. It is a church that is half-hearted and lazy in its service to God. Such a church compromises with worldly standards and behaviors and soon resembles its surrounding society more than it does God’s kingdom. The people of the Laodicean church claimed to be committed Christians, yet in reality they were in a spiritually “wretched” and “pitiful” condition (Revelation 3:17-18). 
  2. Christ severely warns the church about His judgment against spiritual lukewarmness (Revelation 3:15-17).
  3. Christ calls to the church to repent – to turn from their own way, surrender to God’s way and accept His forgiveness. Then they could be restored to a right relationship with Him (Revelation 3:18-19). 
  4. Christ knocks on the door of a lukewarm church (Revelation 3:20), desiring to come in and restore His companionship and blessing with the people. To those who remain devoted and strong in their faith and are overcomers in the midst of a lukewarm church, Christ promises that they will share in His authority and ultimately reign with Him (Revelation 3:21).

THE AMEN / REVELATION 3:14

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Revelation 3:14  

And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;

THE AMEN / REVELATION 3:14

“Amen” is a Hebrew word meaning “surely” or “truly.” Throughout the Bible, the word is used to affirm important sayings, to draw attention to God’s authority and to close blessings and prayers. In 2 Corinthians 1:20, Paul uses the word to emphasize that the promises of God are a resounding “Yes!” in Christ. To the church in Laodicea, Jesus calls Himself “the Amen, the faithful and true witness.” This is a reflection of Isaiah 65:15, “the God of truth [Hebrew amen]” – who is perfectly trustworthy, faithful and able to guarantee His Word. Jesus as “the Amen” guarantees the truth of God’s promises – promises that are still available to us today.

THE HOUR OF TRIAL / REVELATION 3:10

 Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.

THE HOUR OF TRIAL / REVELATION 3:10

Christ’s promise to His faithful followers in Philadelphia to keep them from the hour of trial is identical to Paul’s promise to the Thessalonians that they would be rescued from the “coming wrath” (1 Thessalonians 1:10). This promise extends to all of God’s faithful people throughout the ages (Revelation 3:13, 22). In the original Greek, the phrase “keep you from” can mean either “keep you from experiencing” or “keep you through.” For the church then and the church today, both interpretations are relevant. God will help His people to endure and prevail through the difficulties and opposition they experience in the world, and He will ultimately rescue them from the final “hour of trial.” This final hour includes God’s appointed time of wrath and distress that will come on “the whole world” in the last years of this age, just prior to the establishment of Christ’s kingdom on earth (Revelation 5:10; 6-19; Revelation 20:4). Concerning this time, the Bible reveals the following truths.

  1. This time of trial involves God’s wrath (justified anger, judgment and punishment) on the ungodly (Revelation 6 – 19; Isaiah 13:6-13; 17:4-11; Daniel 9:27; 12:1; Zechariah 14:1-4; Matthew 24:9-31; 1 Thessalonians 5:2).
  2. Also included in this time of trial and tribulation, however, is Satan’s brutal attack on the godly (on those who accept and follow Christ). For these bold believers, there will be hunger, thirst, exposure to harsh weather (Revelation 7:16) and great suffering and tears (Revelation 7:9-17; Daniel 12:10; Matthew 24:15-21). They will experience the natural catastrophes of war, famine and death. Many will be tortured or killed for their faith in Christ (Revelation 6:11; 13:7; 14:3). They will experience the ravages of Satan and demonic forces (Revelation 9:3-5; 12:12), hate and violence from wicked people and persecution by the antichrist (Revelation 6:9; 12;17; 13:15-17). Many will be forced to flee from their homes (Matthew 24:15-21). It will be an especially disastrous time for those with families and children (Matthew 24:19). Those who accept, follow and die for Christ during the tribulation period are considered blessed, for “they will rest from their labor” (Revelation 14:13).
  3. For those who are overcomers (true followers of Christ) before that terrible “day” arrives (Revelation 2:7; Luke 21:36), God will rescue them from that time of severe trial. This most likely will happen through the rapture – the catching up of God’s faithful people to meet Christ in the air before God unleashes His wrath on the world (John 14:3). This rescue is a reward for those who persevere in devotion to Christ and live by God’s Word in true faith.

And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth;

PHILADELPHIA / REVELATION 3:7

Philadelphia was a faithful church that lived by Christ’s Word and did not deny Him. They had endured opposition from society and resisted conforming to the ungodly trend of other churches. This church pleased Christ because they had remained loyal to Him and the truth of the original New Testament message (Revelation 3:7-10). Because of their continued faithfulness, God would open doors of opportunity and the door to His kingdom. He also promises to rescue them from “the hour of trial” (Revelation 3:10). They would not have to rely on their limited strength (Revelation 3:8) to go through the open doors or to escape the trials to come; Christ would reward their faithfulness with His power and provision. One of the ways that churches can continue toward their goal of faithfulness is to follow the example of the Philadelphian church by asking themselves: Are we inwardly focused on ourselves, or are we focused on Christ and His purposes? Are we following Christ through open doors of ministry in our city and in the world?
