HERODIANS / MARK 3:6

(KJV) Mark 3:6

And the Pharisees went forth, and straightway took counsel with the Herodians against him, how they might destroy him.

HERODIANS / MARK 3:6

These were influential Jews who favored the dynasty of the Herod’s (the Roman-appointed rulers over the Jews), which means they supported Roman authority. They opposed Jesus because they feared He might have a disrupting political influence on the people.

LOOKED … IN ANGER / MARK 3:5

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Mark 3:5

And when he had looked round about on them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, he saith unto the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it out: and his hand was restored whole as the other.

LOOKED … IN ANGER / MARK 3:5

Jesus’ anger was fully justified, for it reflected His hatred and disapproval of all ungodliness, wicked rebellion and injustice (Hebrews 1:9). Though Christians must resist unjustified, sinful anger (Galatians 5:20; Colossians 3:8), it is completely appropriate and Christlike to be angry about evil (Exodus 32:19; 1 Samuel 11:6; 2 Samuel 12:5; Nehemiah 5:6). A true Christian’s anger over the sins that are practiced in society (and sometimes by Christians as well) is evidence of standing in agreement with God and His holiness in the battle against evil (Exodus 32:19; 1 Samuel 11:6; Psalms 94:16; Jeremiah 6:11; Acts 17:16). This does not mean that Christ approves of His followers taking harsh actions that set a bad example for those who do not know Christ. In doing so, they actually do more harm than good to Christ’s kingdom and reputation.

THE SABBATH WAS MADE FOR MAN / MARK 2:27

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Mark 2:27-28

And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath: 28 Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.

THE SABBATH WAS MADE FOR MAN / MARK 2:27

God set up the Sabbath (the seventh day) as a blessing for humans (Exodus 20:8). The Sabbath was the last day of the week for Old Testament Jews, but modern Christians have adopted the first day of week as the day of worship in honor of Christ’s resurrection. On the day, we are to put aside our daily work. Instead, we should reserve this day to worship God and refresh ourselves. This is important to keep ourselves physically healthy and spiritually strong (Isaiah 58:13-14). Those who ignore the principle of the Sabbath rob themselves of a blessing and often bring harm on their own physical, mental and spiritual condition (Matthew 12:1).

TO CALL … SINNERS / MARK 2:17

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Mark 2:17

When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

TO CALL … SINNERS / MARK 2:17

See Matthew 9:11. Jesus was not suggesting that anyone is spiritually right apart from God. But those who are self-righteous – who view themselves as right in their own mind or by their own standards – will not realize their need for God. Hope comes to those who recognize and admit their sin, who accept God’s forgiveness through faith in Christ and who receive His gift of spiritual salvation.

HEALING THE PARALYZED MAN / MARK 2:11

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Mark 2:11

I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way into thine house.

HEALING THE PARALYZED MAN / MARK 2:11

It was never God’s plan that humankind should suffer sickness and infirmity. These things are the results of the sinfulness of the human race (people’s opposition and rebellion against God and rejection of His standards) and the activity of Satan in the world. This does not mean that whenever a person is sick or suffering that it is a direct result of a specific sin in his or her life. The curse of sin and rebellion affects the entire human race, and suffering is common in a world that has gone its own way and defied God and His purposes. Satan, however, will try to use human suffering to discourage and destroy the believer’s faith in God. This means that every healing that a person receives through Christ involves God stepping into Satan’s realm and destroying his evil work (1 John 3:8). This passage is a great example of how God can work through the faith and spiritual determination of one person (or a group of people) to bring physical and spiritual deliverance to another person.

DROVE OUT MANY DEMONS / MARK 1:34

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Mark 1:33-24

And all the city was gathered together at the door. 34 And he healed many that were sick of divers diseases, and cast out many devils; and suffered not the devils to speak, because they knew him.

DROVE OUT MANY DEMONS / MARK 1:34

Luke says in Luke 4:41 of his gospel that Jesus did not permit the demons to speak “because they know he was the Christ.” Perhaps Jesus wanted to reveal His identity and purposes through His own words and actions in His own time; therefore, He would not allow demons to interrupt His plans. He sometimes gave people the same instructions not to tell what He had done (Mark 1:44), but probably for different reasons, including the fact that He did not want people to focus too heavily on His miracles and miss His message. He also did not want to cause overwhelming opposition to His ministry before He had completed His mission.

(KJV) Mark 1:21

And they went into Capernaum; and straightway on the sabbath day he entered into the synagogue, and taught.

SYNAGOGUE / MARK 1:21

The term means “gathering place” or “place of assembly.” During and after the Jewish exile into Babylon the synagogue became the Jewish gathering place for prayer, teaching and worship. Every village with twelve or more Jewish men had at least one synagogue. It was also used as a schoolroom and a place for other community activities.

COME FOLLOW ME / MARK 1:17

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Mark 1:17

And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men.

COME FOLLOW ME / MARK 1:17

The first and primary calling (appointed task, purpose) of anyone who would be disciples of Jesus is to be with Him (Mark 3:14) – to follow Him and to know Him personally (Philippians 3:8-10). In fact, the term “disciple” refers to a disciplined learner and follower. As a result of this relationship, Christ’s followers must learn to lead others into a devoted personal relationship with Jesus (Proverbs 11:30; Daniel 12:3; 1 Corinthians 9:22).

KINGDOM OF GOD / MARK 1:15

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Mark 1:15

And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

KINGDOM OF GOD / MARK 1:15

In general, God’s kingdom refers to His divine and complete power and authority, as well as His purposes and way of life, both on earth and into eternity. Christ’s coming brought both the message and the evidence of God’s kingdom near to people. His coming fulfilled and completed many purposes of God’s kingdom on earth. God’s kingdom was the theme of Jesus’ earthly message (Matthew 4:17). It appears and develops through several stages throughout history as part of God’s overall plan to bring people into a relationship with Himself:

  1. The kingdom in Israel. The kingdom in the Old Testament consisted of God’s plans and actions involving Israel, which prepared the way for His more complete plan of spiritual salvation of the human race. Because Israel rejected Jesus as the Messiah (the “Anointed One,” Savior, Christ), the kingdom was taken from them (Matthew 21:43).
  2. The kingdom in Christ. God’s kingdom – its authority, power and purposes – was present and active on earth in the person and work of Jesus, who is the King (Luke 11:20).
  3. The kingdom in the church. Presently, God’s kingdom is active through His faithful followers in His church (in local congregations and in the worldwide community of all true Christians). This kingdom is established and continues to grow as people accept His message of forgiveness and new life by admitting their sins, turning from their own way and making Christ the Ruler of their hearts and lives (John 3:3, 5; Romans 14:17; Colossians 1:13). This kingdom is not a political or material kingdom, but a powerful spiritual one in which God works through and among His people to overcome the powers of Satan, sin and evil in the world (Mark 1:27; 9:1).
  4. The kingdom in its completion on earth. This refers to the time foretold by many of the Old Testament prophets (Psalms 89:36-37; Isaiah 11:1-9; Daniel 7:13-14). It takes place at the end of history after Christ has returned to earth to defeat the forces of the antichrist and judge the wicked. Christ will establish a peaceful reign on earth for a thousand years (Revelation 2:26-27; Revelation 20:4).

The kingdom in eternity. At the conclusion of the thousand years, God’s eternal kingdom will be established in the new heaven and new earth (Revelation 21:1-4). The center of the new earth will be the Holy city – the new Jerusalem (Revelation 21:9-11). Its residents will be those throughout history who were faithful to their relationship with God, represented by both His Old Testament people (Revelation 21:12) and His New Testament followers (Revelation 21:14). Their greatest blessing is “they will see His face” (Revelation 22:4; 21:1).

BAPTIZE YOU WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT / MARK 1:8

BAPTIZE YOU WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT / MARK 1:8

John the Baptist was the first one who preached the good news about Jesus and what His coming would mean for Israel and all people. Mark summarizes Joh’s preaching into a single theme: announcing the arrival of Jesus Christ, who would come and baptize (immerse, cleanse, empower) his followers with the Holy Spirit. All those who accept Christ as Savior and Lord (the Forgiver of their sins and Leader of their lives) also should spread the message that Jesus is still the One who baptizes in the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:5; Acts 1:8; Acts 2: 4, Acts 2:38; Acts 2:39; Luke 13:16).
