DAVID CALLS HIM ‘LORD’ / LUKE 20:44

The Jews expected that the Messiah, or Savior, would be a descendant of King David and therefore only a human ruler. Jesus shows that David’s statement in Psalms 110:1, where he refers to his son as “LORD,” indicates that the Messiah is more than a human ruler; He is also the Son of God (Psalms 110:1-7).

LIKE THE ANGELS / LUKE 20:35-36

But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage: ³⁶Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection.

As Jesus considers life for believers in the next age, He reveals that it begins with a resurrection, which involves having new glorified bodies that can never die, but life then will no longer include earthly relationships such as marriage. The fact that relationships will be different does not mean we will not recognize each other or remember our previous relationships. After His resurrection, Jesus was recognized by His disciple (Luke 24:31, 39; Matthew 28:9).

Under normal circumstances, Christians must pay taxes and submit to governmental authority (Romans 13:1-7) even though their highest loyalty is to God. We all must obey secular government except when it conflicts directly with God’s law; we must never disobey Jesus’ commands to conform to worldly regulations.

Those who do not accept Jesus will eventually be broken by Him, and those who defy Him will be crushed under His judgment. See Isaiah 8:14 and Luke 2:34, where Christ is described as a stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes people to stumble and a rock that makes people fall; see also Daniel 2:34-35, 44-45, where the Messiah is a rock that crushes the kingdoms of the world.

The religious leaders questioned Jesus’ authority to take action in the temple or to teach the people (Luke 19:45-48). They were offended and angered because Jesus condemned ungodly practices within God’s house, while they themselves tolerated and participated in those practices. Such actions show how unfit they were to be spiritual leaders. Jesus, as a true spiritual leader, used His authority for the sake of truth and right, even though it cost Him His life (Luke 4:32).

DRIVING OUT THOSE WHO WERE SELLING / LUKE 19:45

This event, referred to as the cleansing of the temple area, was described as the first great public act of Jesus’ ministry (John 2:13-22) and the last great public act of His ministry (Matthew 21:12-17; Mark 11:15-17; Matthew 21:12). Stirred by a strong but justified anger, Jesus forced from God’s house those who were destroying its true spiritual purpose (Mark 11:15-17). Jesus’ concern over the activities that took place in the temple area continues for what takes place in His churches today.

Christ’s greatest concern is for holiness (moral purity, spiritual wholeness, separation from evil and dedication to God) and holy sincerity within His church (John 17:17, 19). He died to “make her holy, cleansing her … and to present her … holy and blameless” (Ephesians 5:25-27).
Worship in the church must be done “in spirit and in truth” (John 4:23-24). For worship to be authentic, it must come from a spirit of deep devotion to God, reflecting a life of godly character. It must be a direct response to God’s Spirit and God’s character. The church must be a place of prayer where His people can encounter God and experience His presence in that way (Matthew 21:13)
Christ will judge all who use His church, His message or His kingdom for personal gain, glory or self-promotion.
Sincere love for God and for His purposes will result in an intense passion and enthusiasm for God’s house and kingdom – just like Jesus’ consuming “zeal” (John 2:17). Being like Jesus means refusing to tolerate unrighteousness and spiritual abuses within the church (Revelation 2-3).
All true Christian ministry must take a stand against those within the church who show blatant irreverence and disregard for God’s kingdom and bring disrespect on the Lord’s reputation (1 Corinthians 6:9-11; Galatians 1:6-10; Revelation 2-3).
Either we will allow Christ into our congregations and services to purify the people and drive out deceit, immorality, irreverence, worldlines, and corruption (Revelation 2-3) or Christ will cleanse His church with judgment at His second coming (Malachi 3:2).

By His entry into Jerusalem on a donkey, Jesus fulfills publicly that He is Israel’s promised King and Messiah (Zechariah 9:9).

The prophet Zechariah predicted this event.
Jesus’ humble entry is a symbolic action that was meant to show that His kingdom is not of this world; He did not come to rule with force or violence. His refusal to take action as a political leader or a military conqueror demonstrates that His kingdom is spiritual (Luke 17:20-21).

COUNTDOWN TO CHRISTMAS THROUGH THE BOOK OF LUKE READING CHALLENGE

What a beautiful tradition! The “Countdown to Christmas Through the Book of Luke” (one chapter a day from December 1–24) has become a favorite for so many families and individuals because it keeps Jesus squarely at the center of the season.

Isn’t it so easy to get wrapped up in the decorating, the gifts, and the get-togethers around Christmas time? We are often too busy to give the REAL meaning of Christmas much thought. That is why I LOVE reading a chapter of Luke every day until Christmas. You get to read about the whole life of Jesus from birth to ascension back to Heaven with this Christmas Bible Reading Plan.

The Christmas season is one of the busiest times of the year. There are gifts to buy, meals to plan, and decorations to hang. It’s easy to get swept away in the hustle and forget the quiet miracle we’re celebrating—the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

This year, I invite you to take a step back from the noise and focus on the life of Jesus. Whether you’re looking for a meaningful way to celebrate with your family, strengthen your personal walk with God, or create a new Christmas tradition, this Bible reading plan will help you reflect on the true reason for the season.

The book of Luke happens to be my favorite Gospel to read. I enjoy his style of writing, and the way he recounts the many miracles of Jesus. I find his vivid descriptions of the things he experienced and heard so fascinating. It amazes me the many different men God used to record His word. They came from so many different walks of life. According to history, Luke was a physician. I believe that is what accounts for his attention to detail, and the descriptions of the lame that Jesus healed.

The book is written in the form of a letter to “Theophilus” (which happens to mean “friend of God”), and it seems very personal to me. He recounts the birth, the ministry, and the death and resurrection of Jesus in 24 chapters. I believe the purpose of this letter is to give us clarity and certainty of the truth of Jesus Christ. It also happens to be the longest of the Gospels…maybe it’s all of that attention to detail?

Why Focus on the Life of Jesus During Christmas?

Christmas isn’t just about a baby in a manger. It’s about the Savior who came to earth, lived a sinless life, and gave His life for ours. Each passage in this reading plan walks you through key moments in the life of Jesus, from His miraculous birth to His ministry, and finally, His ultimate sacrifice and resurrection.

By meditating on these Scriptures, we not only prepare our hearts for Christmas but deepen our understanding of God’s incredible gift of salvation.

How This Bible Reading Plan Works

This plan is simple and flexible, making it easy to fit into your busy holiday schedule. Each day, you’ll read a chapter of Luke. Read it all at once, or a few verses multiple times throughout the day. You can use this plan:

• As a Family Devotional: Read together each evening and discuss what the verses teach about Jesus’ mission.

• In Personal Quiet Time: Reflect on the passages during your morning coffee or evening wind-down.

• With a Small Group: Share insights and pray together as you journey through these Scriptures.

How to Make the Most of This Christmas Bible Reading Plan

Here are some tips to enrich your experience with this reading plan:

1. Start with Prayer: Ask God to open your heart to the message of each passage.

2. Reflect and Journal: Write down what stands out to you and how it applies to your life.

3. Memorize Scripture: Choose one verse each week to meditate on throughout your day.

4. Share with Others: Discuss what you’re learning with your family, friends, or church group.

Light the candles on your Advent wreath (or just one candle each night) while you read.
After reading the chapter, have everyone share one thing that pointed to who Jesus is or what He came to save us from.
Keep a shared family journal—each person writes or draws one takeaway from that day’s chapter.
On December 24, read Luke 24 by candlelight or around the Christmas tree before opening gifts.

Surrounded by the twinkling lights and festive gatherings, don’t forget to set aside time to reflect on Jesus’ life and His incredible gift to us. This Christmas, let’s not just celebrate the birth of a baby but the Savior who came to redeem the world.

And he said unto him, Well, thou good servant: because thou hast been faithful in a very little, have thou authority over ten cities.

YOU HAVE BEEN TRUSTWORTHY / LUKE 19:17

Whoever has been faithful to serve the Lord’s purposes and share His work here on earth will be richly rewarded in His future kingdom. They will be given greater responsibilities in the new heaven and the new earth (Revelation 21:1). Those faithful to a lesser degree will receive a smaller place and responsibility. (Keep in mind that not all elements in a parable directly relate to something in real life. Though the king represents Chris, He never admits to the wicked servant’s statement about being a hard man who takes what is not his. The king simply repeated the servant’s statement in the form of a question. The servant had a misguided view of the king. If that is what he really thought, he should have acted accordingly; Matthew 25:15).

The parable of the ten mina (a mina was worth about three months’ wages) is to show believers that each follower of Christ has the responsibility to use faithfully what God has given him. Each of us has been given time, talents and opportunities that we are to use to honor Christ. We are responsible to make the most of these resources, using them to benefit God’s kingdom.
