MOUNT SINAI … JERUSALEM / GALATIANS 4:25

Mount Sinai, where the old covenant was established with its laws governing Israel’s life (Exodus 19:2; 20:1-17), is equated with Jerusalem in the sense that it represents the center of Judaism (Jewish religion, practices, customs and culture as a way of life), which is still under the spiritual bondage of the law given at Mount Sinai.

ABRAHAM HAD TWO SONS / GALATIANS 4:22

For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman.

ABRAHAM HAD TWO SONS / GALATIANS 4:22

Paul uses actual historical events to illustrate the difference between the old and new covenants. Hagar (who had Abrahm’s first son, Ishmael, who was not the child of God’s promise; Genesis 16) represents the old covenant established at Mount Sinai (Galatians 4:25; Exodus 19:2; 20:1-17). Hagar’s children are like those who now live under the old covenant way of life and are “born in the ordinary way” (Galatians 4:23). That is, they represent those who have not been “born of the Spirit” (John 3:8). Sarah, Abraham’s wife who gave birth to Isaac, the child of God’s promise (Genesis 21:1-7), represents the new covenant. In a spiritual sense, her children are true children of God who are “born by the power of the Spirit” (Galatians 4:29).

THE PAINS OF CHILDBIRTH / GALATIANS 4:19

“The pains of childbirth” (Greek odino) describe the heartache, emotional pain and spiritual affection Paul feels for those Galatians who have abandoned true faith in Christ because they have followed false leaders and their teachings. He is desperately praying for those who “have been alienated from Christ” and have “fallen away from grace” (Galatians 5:4) in a useless attempt to gain salvation through following the regulations of the law. Paul’s analogy of childbirth represents the fact that these wayward individuals need a second spiritual birth (John 3:3-7), and Paul himself is suffering once more with spiritual birth pains in order that Christ might be “formed” in them through a renewed faith and relationship with God.

This illness may have been eye trouble (Galatians 4:15), malaria, Paul’s thorn in the flesh mentioned in 2 Corinthians 12:7 or some physical problem due to stoning (one of the severe persecutions Paul endured for the sake of Christ). Christ’s faithful followers who fulfill His purposes and are active in Christian service may also suffer times of ill health, bodily pain or weakness.

Before they received Christ, many of the Galatians worshiped idols or beings they thought were gods. Even those who did not were still enslaved to Satan and sin. But when they became Christians, they learned how foolish and empty it was to trust in false gods or to rely on rituals and regulations to give them a relationship with the one true God.

THE SPIRIT WHO CALLS OUT “ABBA FATHER” / GALATIANS 4:6

And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

THE SPIRIT WHO CALLS OUT “ABBA FATHER” / GALATIANS 4:6

Because Christians are now God’s children, they have a new “guardian” (Galatians 4:2; not the law or human initiative), which is the Spirit of God (Romans 8:9). One of the Holy Spirit’s tasks is to create in God’s children a feeling of filial love (relating to parents or family) that causes them to know God as their Father.

  1. The term “Abba” is Aramaic, meaning “Father.” It was the word Jesus used when referring to His heavenly father. The combining of the Aramaic term “Abba” with the Greek term for father (pater) expresses the depth of intimacy, warmth and confidence by which the Holy Spirit helps us relate to and cry out to God (Mark 14:36; Romans 8:15,26-27). Two sure signs of the Spirit’s work within us are the natural and willing cry to God as “Father” and the natural and willing obedience to Jesus as “Lord” (1 Corinthians 12:3).
  2. Though all true believers have the Holy Spirit living within them (Romans 8:9-11; 1 Corinthians 6:15-20; 2 Corinthians 3:3; Ephesians 1:13; Hebrews 6:4; 1 John 3:24; 4:13), in this passage Paul may also have in mind the baptism in the Holy Spirit and His continual filling (Acts 1:5; Acts 2:4; Ephesians 5:18). After all, God makes our relationship to Him as children the reason for sending the Spirit. Because we are already “sons” through faith in Christ, God sends the Spirit into our hearts. The receiving of “the full rights of sons” (Galatians 4:5) would refer to spiritual salvation and a right relationship with God, which this passage describes as preceding the sending of “the Spirit of His Son” (Galatians 3:5).

Paul’s statement here is used mainly to illustrate the situation of a believer under the Old Testament covenant (God’s standard of maintaining a relationship with Him based on Old Testament laws and sacrifices, before Christ made the perfect sacrifice for sin with His own life). The principle of this passage, however, also indicates the godly parents normally oversaw the instruction of their children (Deuteronomy 6:7). Such supervision would have been done through education in the home or by placing the children under the care and instruction of godly teachers.  Scripture clearly teaches that parents should do all they can to be sure that their children receive a God-centered, Christ-honoring education in all aspects of life, starting in the home. This also implies that we are to guard our children as they encounter ungodly influences and that we teach them how to recognize and resist such influences. We must guide them away from the world’s ungodly philosophies and unbiblical principles and toward faith and dependence on God (Luke 1:17).

Paul removes all barriers to one’s spiritual relationship with Jesus Christ, including ethnic, racial, national, socio-economic and gender. All who are “in Christ” are equal heirs of “the gracious gift of life” (1 Peter 3:7), the promised Spirit (Galatians 3:14; Galatians 4:6) and spiritual renewal in God’s image (Colossians 3:10-11). Although men and women are equal heirs in Christ, their God-assigned roles in marriage and their unique distinctions in other aspects of life and society remain unchanged (1 Peter 3:1-4; Ephesians 5:22; Ephesians 5:23; 1 Timothy 2:13, 15).

The Greek word paidagogos, from which we get the word “pedagogue” (teacher, educator, guardian), is here translated as “put in charge.” In New Testament times, the person who was “put in charge” was a personal slave who accompanied a master’s child wherever the child went – including to school – acting as a guardian and exercising a degree of discipline over the child. In a similar way, the purpose of God’s law for a time was to guide people in God’s ways, guard their behavior and provide for discipline. But the highest purpose of God’s law is to reveal sin, to expose our own inability to live up to God’s perfect standard and to point us to our need for Christ and His spiritually saving work (Galatians 3:19).

WHAT THEN WAS THE PUPOSE OF THE LAW? / GALATIANS 3:19

(KJV) Galatians 3:19

Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.

WHAT THEN WAS THE PUPOSE OF THE LAW? / GALATIANS 3:19

The word for “law” (Greek nomos; Hebrew torah) means “teaching” or “direction.” The law can refer to the Ten Commandments, the Pentateuch (the first five Old Testament books) or any commandment in the Old Testament. Paul’s use of law here would include the sacrificial system that was part of God’s Old Testament covenant with Israel as given to Moses. (The covenant was God’s “life agreement” with Israel based on His laws and promises to them and on their faithfulness and obedience to Him.) Concerning the law, Paul states several things:

  1. It was given by God “because of transgressions.” This means that it (a) defined offenses against God and exposed sin as the violation of God’s will (His purposes, standards and desires based on His perfect character and plans) and (b) awakened humanity’s sense of need for God’s mercy, grace and salvation through Christ (Galatians 3:24; Romans 5:20; 8:2).
  2. Although the Old Testament law was holy, good and righteous (Romans 7:12), it was incomplete in that it could not give people spiritual life or moral strength (Galatians 3:21; Romans 8:3; Hebrews 7:18-19). No form of rule keeping – even keeping and obeying God’s rules – can put us in a right relationship with God. 
  3. The law acted as a temporary tutor, or instructional guide, for God’s people, protecting and pointing them in the right direction until complete spiritual salvation was revealed and became available through faith in Jesus Christ (Galatians 3:22-26).Up to that time, the law revealed God’s will and standard for His people’s behavior (Exodus 19:4-6; 20:1-17; 21:1-24:8). It also provided for blood sacrifices to cover the people’s sins (Leviticus 1:5; 16:33) and pointed prophetically to Christ’s sin-covering, forgiveness-providing death (Hebrews 9:14; 10:12-14).
  4. The law was given “to lead us to Christ that we might be justified by faith” (Galatians 3:24). But now that Christ has come, the instructional role of the law has ended (Galatians 3:25). Though God’s law still serves to reveal God’s perfect standard and to expose our need for Christ, we no longer attempt to maintain a right relationship with God through the provisions of the Old Testament law, including the sacrificial system. Salvation is now based on a new covenant provision (God’s “life agreement” with people based on the life, death and resurrection of His Son, Jesus). The main provision is Jesus’ atoning (sin-covering) death and miraculous resurrection, which sealed God’s new covenant and provided forgiveness and new life for those who surrender their lives to Christ (Galatians 3:27-29; Matthew 5:17).
