THE BLOOD OF CHRIST / HEBREWS 9:14

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Hebrews 9:14

How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

THE BLOOD OF CHRIST / HEBREWS 9:14

The blood of Jesus Christ, signifying His sacrifice for our sin, is central to the New Testament concept of redemption, spiritual salvation (1 Corinthians 10:16; 11:27; Ephesians 2:13; 1 Peter 1:2; Revelation 7:14; 12:11). As He died on the cross, Jesus shed His innocent blood in order to remove our sins and to restore our opportunity for a right relationship with God (Hebrews 5:8; Romans 5:19; Philippians 2:8; Leviticus 16).

By His blood, Christ Jesus accomplished the following:

  1. His blood provides forgiveness for the sins of all who turn from their own way and put their faith in Christ (Matthew 26:28).
  2. His blood ransoms (rescues, restores) all true believers from the control of Satan and evil powers (Acts 20:28; Ephesians 1:7; 1 Peter 1:18-19; Revelation 5:9; 12:11).
  3. His blood justifies (makes right with God) all who entrust their lives to Him (Romans 3:24-25).
  4. His blood cleanses believers’ consciences from guilt so that they might serve God with full assurance of salvation (Hebrews 9:14; 10:22; 13:18).
  5. His blood sanctifies (purifies, refines, develops, sets apart for God’s service) God’s people (Hebrews 13:12; 1 John 1:7-10).
  6. His blood opens the way for Christ’s followers to come directly to God through Christ in order to find grace, mercy, help and salvation (Hebrews 7:25; 10:19; Ephesians 2:13, 18).
  7. His blood is a guarantee of all the promises of the new covenant (Hebrews 10:29; 13:20; Matthew 26:28; 1 Corinthians 11:25).
  8. The saving, restoring and purifying power of Christ’s blood is continually made available to believers as they come to God through faith in Christ (Hebrews 7:25; 10:22; 1 John 1:7; Romans 3:25).

But into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people:

THE INNER ROOM / HEBREWS 9:7

The inner sanctuary, called the Most Holy Place, symbolized God’s presence. No one other than the high priest could enter the Most Holy Place, and he could only do so once a year on the Day of Atonement (Hebrews 9:5). God was teaching that under the old covenant, unrestricted access to God’s presence was not yet possible because intimate companionship with Him could exist only when a person’s inward conscience had been cleansed perfectly (Hebrews 9:8-9). The law and sacrificial system could not provide such a cleansing. Only Jesus Christ’s perfect personal sacrifice for sin could provide complete cleansing from the guilt of sin.

THE ATONEMENT COVER / HEBREWS 9:5

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Hebrews 9:5

And over it the cherubims of glory shadowing the mercyseat; of which we cannot now speak particularly.

THE ATONEMENT COVER / HEBREWS 9:5

On the annual Day of Atonement, both the bull’s blood (that made atonement, or “sin covering,” for the high priest and his family) and the goat’s blood (that served as an offering for the sins of the entire nation) were sprinkled on the atonement cover as an offering to God (Leviticus 16:2, 14). The earthly atonement cover was a type – a prophetic symbol – of the heavenly “throne of grace” (Hebrews 4:16), which believers can now approach because of Christ’s shed blood in order to receive mercy and help for all their needs.

ARK OF THE COVENANT / HEBREWS 9:4

This was the most sacred furnishing in the Old Testament tabernacle (the portable worship center). It was a rectangular chest (3.75 feet long, 2.25 feet wide and 2.25 feet high) made of acacia wood and overlaid with pure gold inside and out. The ark represented God’s presence among the people. Three items were originally inside the ark of the covenant:

  1. A jar of manna, the food God miraculously provided in the desert, as a reminder of God’s supernatural provision.
  2. Aaron’s staff, or walking stick, as a reminder of God’s mighty acts and His choice of Aaron and his descendants as Israel’s priests.
  3. The two stone tablets on which were written the Ten Commandments, as a reminder of the law’s importance as God’s standard for His people. The lid of the ark was a golden plate called the atonement cover. It had two solid gold angelic figures (Hebrews 9:5) on either side of what was called the mercy seat, on which sacrificial blood would be sprinkled, showing God’s saving mercy through shed blood.

THE FIRST COVENANT / HEBREWS 9:1-7

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Hebrews 9:1-7

Then verily the first covenant had also ordinances of divine service, and a worldly sanctuary.

For there was a tabernacle made; the first, wherein was the candlestick, and the table, and the shewbread; which is called the sanctuary.

And after the second veil, the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of all;

Which had the golden censer, and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold, wherein was the golden pot that had manna, and Aaron’s rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant;

And over it the cherubims of glory shadowing the mercyseat; of which we cannot now speak particularly.

Now when these things were thus ordained, the priests went always into the first tabernacle, accomplishing the service of God.

But into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people:

THE FIRST COVENANT / HEBREWS 9:1-7

In his discussion on how the new covenant established by Christ is so much superior to the old (or first) covenant, the writer to the Hebrews analyzes the major features of worship and sacrifice in Israel’s religion.

THE BLOOD OF BULLS / HEBREWS 10:4

(KJV) Hebrews 10:3-4
But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year.

4For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.

THE BLOOD OF BULLS / HEBREWS 10:4

The blood of animals was only a temporary provision or atonement (“covering over”) for the sins of the people. Ultimately, a human was needed to serve as substitute for humanity. That is why Christ came to earth and was born as a human so that He might offer Himself in our place (Hebrews 2:9, 14). In addition, only a human who was free from sin and lived perfectly by God’s standard could take our full punishment for sin (Hebrews 2:14-18; 4:15) and perfectly satisfy the demands of God’s justice and holiness (Romans 3:25-26). Jesus Christ was the only one who could fulfill this criteria.

WILL APPEAR A SECOND TIME / HEBREWS 9:28

Under the old covenant, Israelites watched and waited intently for the high priest to reappear after he had gone into the inner sanctuary (the Most Holy Place) to make atonement (“covering over” for sin) with the blood of the sacrifice. In a similar way, Christ’s followers, knowing that their high priest has entered the heavenly sanctuary as their advocate, wait with a deep and focused hope for His reappearing to being a complete salvation by taking them to be with Him in heaven forever (John 14:3; 2 Timothy 4:8).

WITHOUT THE SHEDDING OF BLOOD … NO FORGIVENESS / HEBREWS 9:22

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Hebrews 9:22

And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.

WITHOUT THE SHEDDING OF BLOOD … NO FORGIVENESS / HEBREWS 9:22

Sin – which is opposition, rebellion and defiance toward God and His standards – is so radically opposed to God’s perfect character that it requires the most extreme penalty: death and separation from God (Romans 6:23; Isaiah 59:2). Forgiveness can only be provided at the cost of life (Leviticus 17:11). But imperfect sacrifices could never permanently remove sin and guilt (Hebrews 10:4). Even our own lives are not worthy to pay the full price since death would simply give us what we deserve for defying God. Only God Himself could provide a sacrifice that satisfies His perfect justice and pays the penalty for sin once and for all (Hebrews 7:27; 9:12, 29; 10:10; 1 Peter 3:18). God’s Provision came through the willing sacrifice of His Son, Jesus Christ (Romans 3:25).

Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?

TRAMPLED THE SON OF GOD / HEBREWS 10:29

To keep on sinning deliberately after we have received the knowledge of the truth (Hebrews 10:26) is

  1. To be guilty of trampling on Jesus Christ (Hebrews 10:29), which means treating Him with contempt (hatred, disrespect, and rejection)
  2. To behave as if the blood of Christ – His sacrifice for us – is unworthy of our loyalty
  3. To insult and rebel against the Holy spirit, who brings God’s favor, love, and power to our lives. To reject Christ’s sacrifice is to reject the only sacrifice there is that can provide access to God and keep us in right relationship with Him.

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Hebrews 10:19
Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,

SINCE WE HAVE CONFIDENCE / HEBREWS 10:19

The word “confidence” (Greek parrhesia) occurs four times in the book of Hebrews (Hebrews 3:14; 4:16; 10:19; 10:35). Sometimes it means “bedrock belief” (a solid foundation of faith) or “bold assurance.” Here, however, it indicated a bold (yet humble) freedom and authorized access into “the Most Holy Place” of God’s presence because of “the blood of Jesus.” Such access was not available under the old covenant, except once a year by one man (the high priest). When Jesus died, however, the temple’s curtain was “torn in two from top to bottom” (Mark 15:38), indicating that the barrier to God’s presence had been removed; the way is now open for people to come directly to Him through faith in Christ. The curtain symbolized Christ’s body (Hebrews 10:20) that was torn through His suffering and death, which gave us spiritual freedom and access to God. This means that we can, with gratitude and confidence, constantly come to God in prayer.
