THERE ARE THREE THAT TESTIFY / 1 JOHN 5:7-9

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 John 5:7-9

For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.

If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son.

THERE ARE THREE THAT TESTIFY / 1 JOHN 5:7-9

The Old Testament law required “two or three witnesses” (Deuteronomy 17:6; 19:15), and it continues as a valid means of confirmation of a matter in the New Testament church (1 Timothy 5:19).

BY WATER AND BLOOD / 1 JOHN 5:6

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 John 5:6 This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth.

BY WATER AND BLOOD / 1 JOHN 5:6

This phrase probably refers to Jesus’ baptism at the beginning of His ministry and to His death on the cross. John may have written this because some were teaching that Christ did not experience death. These false teachers were early Gnostics who basically claimed that “spirit” (the spirit realm) is good, and “matter” (the physical world) is evil. For this reason, they could not conceive of God actually taking on human form. They argued that Jesus was born as a mere man and that the Christ (the Son of God) came on Jesus at His baptism but left Him before His suffering and death on the cross, so that only the man Jesus died, not the Son of God. Some even claimed that Jesus only appeared to have a body. Throughout this letter, John directly challenges these notions and affirms that Jesus Christ is both God and man (1 John 5:1-4; 4:2; 5:5; 1 John 5:1; 1 John 5:2; 1 John 5:3; 1 John 5:4). In this passage, he stresses that it was this God-man, Jesus Christ, who came into the world, was baptized and died for sins (1 John 5:6). This truth is vitally important because only as fully God and fully man could Jesus provide the perfect sacrifice to pay the penalty of sin once and for all (Hebrews 10:10; 1 Peter 3:18), bridging the gap that humanity’s sin had created between people and God. The Holy Spirit also bears witness to this truth (1 John 5:7-8). The Spirit descended on Jesus at His baptism (John 1:32-34; John 1:33), and He continues to confirm the truth of Christ in the heart of all true believers.

OVERCOME THE WORLD, EVEN OUR FAITH / 1 JOHN 5:4

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 John 5:4

For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

OVERCOME THE WORLD, EVEN OUR FAITH / 1 JOHN 5:4

The faith that allows God’s people to overcome the world’s corrupt influences and its fierce opposition to God’s people is a faith that looks beyond natural appearances and sees eternal realities (Hebrews 11:1). It is a faith that experiences God’s power and loves Christ to such an extent that the world’s sinful pleasures, misguided values, ungodly ways and selfish materialism lose their appeal. Instead, we are repulsed by these things and grieved at the destruction that sin and worldly ideals cause in people’s lives (Revelation 2:7).

(KJV) 1 John 5:30

For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

HIS COMMANDS ARE NOT BURDENSOME / 1 JOHN 5:3

True children of God will not consider God’s commands, principles and guidelines too heavy, unpleasant or unreasonable (Psalms 119:16, 47, 70). This does not mean that His commands will be easy to live by. Yet, as John explains in 1 John 5:4. our faith and spiritual salvation bring the Holy Spirit’s power into our lives, giving us both the desire and the ability to obey God (Philippians 2:13).

THIS IS HOW WE KNOW / 1 JOHN 5:2

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 John 5:2

By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.

THIS IS HOW WE KNOW / 1 JOHN 5:2

True Christian love, which is the fruit of the Christian’s love for God (Mark 12:30) and obedience to His commands (1 John 2:3; 3:23; John 5:10; 14:21; Matthew 22:37), will express itself in unselfish love for others – the second greatest commandment (Matthew 22:39-40). That is to say, the acts of love toward others are evidence of true love for God.

BELIEVES … LOVES / 1 JOHN 5:1

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 John 5:1

Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him.

BELIEVES … LOVES / 1 JOHN 5:1

Genuine faith in God will express itself in gratitude to and love for the Gather and Jesus Christ, His Son. True faith and active love are inseparable because when we are “born of God” (when we have accepted His forgiveness and become His child), the Holy Spirit pours God’s love into our hearts (Romans 5:5). The belief in God that John describes is more than mentally acknowledging that God exists or that His Word is true; it is a matter of active faith that surrenders one’s life to God’s control for His complete guidance and leadership (John 1:12; John 5:24).

IF WE CLAIM TO BE WITHOUT SIN / 1 JOHN 1:8

START YOUR DAY RIGHT WITH DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 John 1:8

If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

IF WE CLAIM TO BE WITHOUT SIN / 1 JOHN 1:8

John uses the noun “sin” (Greek hamartian) – wrong-doing, offense against God and being out of bounds by His standards – rather than the verb. This means that he is emphasizing sin not just as a matter of God-defying actions but as a basic principle or trait in human nature.

  1. John is probably arguing against those who claim that sin does not exist as a principle or power in human nature, or those who say that their evil actions are not really sin. This deceptive belief is still with us today in those who deny the fact of sin or have a deterministic view of evil. Those who follow this view believe that sin is determined by outside causes or things we cannot control such as biological, psychological, or social factors. Therefore, each person has little or no real choice in relation to who they are and what they do. This leads to the conclusion that no one is responsible for his or her own sinful actions (Romans 6:1-2; 7:9-11).
  2. Believers must be aware that the sinful nature is a very real and continuous threat in their lives. Through the power of the Holy Spirit within them, Christ’s followers must constantly put to death the God-defying tendencies and actions of the sinful nature (Romans 6:11; 8:13; Galatians 5:16-25).

BECAUSE WE OBEY HIS COMMANDS / 1 JOHN 3:22

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 John 3:22
And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

BECAUSE WE OBEY HIS COMMANDS / 1 JOHN 3:22

John declares that an effective prayer life is related to our devotion to God. Obeying, loving, and pleasing God (John 8:29; 2 Corinthians 5:9; Ephesians 5:10; Hebrews 13:21) are basic conditions for what we ask for in prayer. Of course, receiving answers to prayer also requires asking with the right motives (James 4:3) and asking according to God’s own desires and purposes (1 John 5:14). Having proper motives and knowing God’s will ware directly linked to our personal relationship with Christ (Psalms 50:14-15; Proverbs 15:29; Isaiah 59:1-2; Matthew 6:15; Mark 11:25; James 5:16).

MUST WALK AS JESUS DID / 1 JOHN 2:6

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 John 2:6

He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

MUST WALK AS JESUS DID / 1 JOHN 2:6

Following Jesus’ example is not meant to be optional for Christians; it is to be a way of life (Acts 11:26) that boldly identifies with Christ (Mark 8:34) and reflects His character. This is not entirely possible without spending time in God’s Word because that is the one place where we actually see what Jesus would do. By studying God’s Word for ourselves and praying that God would help us apply it to our lives, we invite the Holy Spirit to guide us in Jesus’ steps and develop His character in us (John 14:25-26; 17:12-15).

THE DEVIL / 1 JOHN 3:8

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 John 3:8
He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

THE DEVIL / 1 JOHN 3:8

Many people in the world, even some in the church, refuse to accept the fact of a real devil who wars against God and seeks to destroy people spiritually and in every other way (1 Peter 5:8). But John, one of Jesus’ closest followers, has much to say about “the devil.” He calls him “the evil one” (1 John 3:13; 2:13-14; 5:18-19), who “has been sinning from the beginning” (from the time he first rebelled against God, before the temptation of Adam and Eve, John 8:44). He is the instigator of sin, and those who continue to live in sin are “of the devil” (1 John 3:8), are his children (1 John 3:12). He is behind “the spirit of antichrist” that is in the world (1 John 4:3), and he has “the whole world” – those who do not follow God -under his control (1 John 5:19). But the devil cannot permanently harm God’s children (1 John 5:18). In fact, the follower of Christ will “overcome the evil one” (1 John 2:13-14; 4:4), and Christ will “destroy the devil’s work” (1 John 3:8).
