FAITH IN GOD / MARK 11:22

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Mark 11:22

And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God.

FAITH IN GOD / MARK 11:22

The phrase in Greek is piston theou, in which “God” (theou) can be understood in the objective genitive case. This would make the phrase literally “faith of God” or “faith from God” in the sense of faith given by God for miracles. Such faith requires the response of “faith in God” from us, where God is the object of our faith. Other examples of the use of the objective genitive case include Luke 6:12 (God and object of prayer); Luke 11:42 (God the object of love); Romans 3:10 (God the object of fear). All throughout the Bible God is both the source and the object of true faith. “Abraham believed God [not just God’s promise], and it [Abrahm’s faith] was credited to him as righteousness” (Romans 4:3). We too must focus our faith and trust, not on the issue involved and not on faith itself, but fully on God (Matthew 17:20).

A HOUSE OF PRAYER FOR ALL NATIONS / MARK 11:17

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Mark 11:17

And he taught, saying unto them, Is it not written, My house shall be called of all nations the house of prayer? but ye have made it a den of thieves.

A HOUSE OF PRAYER FOR ALL NATIONS / MARK 11:17

Jesus makes it clear that God’s house was meant to be a special place where God’s people could meet with Him for prayer and worship (Luke 19:45). It must not be disrespected and corrupted by making it a center for social gatherings, selling merchandise or financial advancement. The outer court of the temple, where all of this was taking place, was called the court of the Gentiles – the only place where people of other nations who were not Jewish could gather for worship and prayer. All of the activity going on there made prayer and worship nearly impossible. So not only were the vendors taking advantage of people, but they were also literally preventing foreigners from spending time with God. This was their greatest crime. Jesus’ actions assured all people access to the place of worship.

JESUS ENTERED THE TEMPLE AREA / MARK 11:15-16

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Mark 11:15-16

 And they come to Jerusalem: and Jesus went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves;

16 And would not suffer that any man should carry any vessel through the temple.

JESUS ENTERED THE TEMPLE AREA / MARK 11:15-16

Driving out those who were buying and selling in the temple area shows Christ’s passion for true holiness (moral purity, spiritual wholeness, separation from evil and dedication to God) and prayer among those who claim to worship God (Isaiah 56:7; Luke 19:45). People who came to Jerusalem for the Passover Feast needed animals for the ritual sacrifices, but the temple area was not the appropriate place for the sellers to set up their booths. In addition, the money changers took advantage of the people who needed to exchange their foreign currency so they could pay the annual temple tax. The temple courts had also become a shortcut for businesspeople carrying their merchandise (Mark 11:16) to the other side of the city. It seems that the entire temple area during this time had become a marketplace overrun with business traffic.

MAY NO ONE EVER EAT FRUIT FROM YOU AGAIN / MARK 11:14

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Mark 11:14

And Jesus answered and said unto it, No man eat fruit of thee hereafter for ever. And his disciples heard it.

MAY NO ONE EVER EAT FRUIT FROM YOU AGAIN / MARK 11:14

Though fig trees in Jerusalem at this particular time usually were not full of mature leaves for at least another month or two, this tree was an exception. By the time its leaves were full, it should have had evidence of fruit. Jesus’ actions may have been a parable of judgment with the fig tree representing Israel (Hosea 9:10; Nehemiah 3:12). The fact that the incident where Jesus drove the money changers out of the temple area is mentioned between two parts of the fig tree account (Mark 11:20) may support a judgment theme. The only application Jesus makes, however, is in reference to faith and prayer (Mark 11:21-25).

BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES / MARK 11:9

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Mark 11:9

And they that went before, and they that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna; Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord:

BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES / MARK 11:9

The term “Hosanna” means “O, save,” but the crowd had a different idea about the meaning of salvation than Jesus meant. The crowd believed that the Messiah (the promised Savior, Christ) would be a social activist and political leader who would finally restore Israel nationally and rule the nations. They failed to understand the purpose that Jesus expressed about His coming into the world – to bring spiritual salvation and to establish His kingdom and rule in people’s hearts. When Jesus did not fulfill their misguided expectations, the crowd later shouted, “crucify him!” (Mark 15:13).

And when they came nigh to Jerusalem, unto Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount of Olives, he sendeth forth two of his disciples, And saith unto them, Go your way into the village over against you: and as soon as ye be entered into it, ye shall find a colt tied, whereon never man sat; loose him, and bring him.

PASSION WEEK / MARK 11:1-2

At this point, Mark begins to describe the events of Christ’s life during the final week before His death on the cross (Mark 11-15), followed by the account of His resurrection (Mark 16).

God can do so much more than we ask and desire in prayer; His ability exceeds anything we can imagine. This promise is conditional, which means that it depends on the degree of the Holy Spirit’s presence, purpose and power operating in our lives (Ephesians 1:18-21; Ephesians 3:16-19; Isaiah 65:24; John 15:7; Philippians 2:13).

ROOTED AND ESTABLISHED IN LOVE / EPHESIANS 3:17

“Rooted” (Greek errizomenoi) is a horticultural term (dealing with plants), and “established” is an architectural term (dealing with buildings and structures) meaning “founded.” The follower of Jesus “being rooted” in the revelation of God’s love in Christ is like a plant with deep roots in the soil. “Being established” in his love is like a building with a strong foundation laid on a solid rock. Both metaphors, or word pictures, symbolize a deep relationship as opposed to a shallow relationship. These symbols also convey that revelation of “the love of Christ” (Ephesians 3:18) is necessary for a deep, solid relationship that is expressed in powerful ways for God’s honor Ephesians 3:19-21).

STRENGTHEN … INNER BEING / EPHESIANS 3:16-19

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Ephesians 3:16-19

That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; 17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; 19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.

STRENGTHEN … INNER BEING / EPHESIANS 3:16-19

To be strengthened by the Spirit in the “inner being” is to have our spirits filled with the energy of His life and to have our souls (our motives, desires, feelings, thoughts and purposes) placed more and more under the Spirit’s influence and direction. In the most complete sense, this allows God to show His power through us in greater ways. There are four aspects to the purpose of this spiritual strengthening:

  1. That Christ may establish His presence in our hearts (Ephesians 3:16-17; Romans 8:9-10).
  2. That we may be grounded in sincere love for God, Christ and others.
  3. That we may comprehend with our minds and experience in our lives Christ’s love for us (Ephesians 3:18-19).
  4. That we may be filled with “all the fullness of God” (Ephesians 3:19; and Ephesians 1:23). God’s presence, through the Holy Spirit, should fill and saturate our lives in such a way that we reflect from our innermost being the character and honor of the Lord Jesus Christ (Ephesians 4:13, 15, 224-24).
