But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation.

WOE TO YOU WHO ARE RICH / LUKE 6:24

Jesus is not condemning all wealthy people; He is speaking of those who center their lives, purposes, happiness or goals primarily on the pursuit of money or material things.

OCTOBER BLESSINGS

OCTOBER BLESSINGS

God gives us some wonderful things in the fall. Just look around and you will see beautiful leaves and stunning views. What gifts do we give to others? Not maybe physical or material things, but what kind of a difference are we making in people’s lives? 2 Corinthians 9: 6-11 Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work” Our prayer should be “Lord, teach us how to serve one another. Help us to put the needs of others first, as you did for us. Show us ways to use our gifts to bless others.”

This time year always makes people a little more cheerful and helpful. The leaves changing colors and the weather becoming a little cooler remind us that change is good. To everything there is a time and a season.

The biblical meaning of autumn is closely associated with harvesting crops that He has blessed upon the earth. That’s where the phrase “reap what you sow” comes in. In spiritual terms, we reap the benefits of our faithful labor of prayer, humility, and love. The concept of “sowing and reaping” is immensely better than “karma.” The sowing part is not just a duty that I must perform. There is nourishment that accompanies doing the will of God and helping other people. There is a joy in finishing good works for the Lord (John 4:34) and that joy isn’t dependent on the harvest that may come later. “Those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy” (Psalm 126:5). God can even bring joy out of dire, even tragic, events. God’s love is so much greater than karma.

Reaping and sowing is all about blessings and consequences. I seek to live in obedience more and more by sowing good things and then I reap other good things, but not necessarily in the same field. I often sow in one field and reap in another. Always remember that whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously (2 Corinthians 9:6). So, go ahead and sow generously and even lavishly. There is always some kind of reward. Some rewards are instantaneous and easy to spot. Others take a little more introspection to see but they are there all the same. Let us give thanks to the Lord for the gift of October. May it be a month filled with Your presence, Your peace, and Your promises fulfilled. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

HOW THEIR FATHERS TREATED THE PROPHETS / LUKE 6:23

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Luke 6:23

Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven: for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets.

HOW THEIR FATHERS TREATED THE PROPHETS / LUKE 6:23

The Old Testament people of Israel frequently rejected the prophets and their challenging messages (1 Kings 19:10; Matthew 5:12; 23:31, 37; Acts 7:51-52).

  1. Churches today should keep in mind that God still sends prophets to His people (1 Corinthians 12:28; Ephesians 4:11) for the purpose of challenging both the leaders and the people to maintain or return to lives of purity, righteousness, integrity, faithfulness to God’s Word and separation from the ungodly beliefs and lifestyles of the world (Revelation 2 – 3).
  2. Without fully understanding what they are doing, churches can do the same thing as Old Testament Israel by rejecting messages from genuine prophets and leaders and losing God’s blessing and purpose for their congregations. But they can also choose to accept God’s message, turn away from sin, deepen their loyalty to God and His Word and realize their true purpose as God’s people. Those churches that reject God’s true prophets will at some point be rejected by God Himself (Luke 13:34-25; Revelation 2 – 3).
  3. Satan will deliberately send false prophets into the churches (Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43), ministers who reject the absolute authority of God’s Word. These insincere messengers often claim to have a “new” revelation that carries the authority of God’s Word. In their shrewdness, they deceive many people who view their messages as completely dependable and above scrutiny by spiritually discerning people. These false prophets must be firmly rejected.

WHEN MEN HATE YOU / LUKE 6:22

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Luke 6:22

Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man’s sake.

WHEN MEN HATE YOU / LUKE 6:22

Followers of Jesus should have reason for great joy (Luke 6:23) when they are criticized and rejected because of faithfulness to Christ and His godly standards. Persecution because of true devotion to Christ (not because of our own proud opposition to worldly behaviors and standards) is proof of a true relationship with the Lord since Jesus was also hated and mistreated by the world (John 15:18-21; Matthew 5:10).

SERMON ON THE PLAIN / LUKE 6:17-19

(KJV) Luke 6:17-19

And he came down with them, and stood in the plain, and the company of his disciples, and a great multitude of people out of all Judaea and Jerusalem, and from the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, which came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases; 18 And they that were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed. 19 And the whole multitude sought to touch him: for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all.

SERMON ON THE PLAIN / LUKE 6:17-19

See Matthew 5 – 7 on the Sermon on the Mount. If this teaching refers to the same instance described in Matthew 5 – 7, the “level place” may refer to a plateau, which would be the mountainside mentioned in Matthew 5:1.

SPENT THE NIGHT PRAYING / LUKE 6:12

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Luke 6:12

And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.

SPENT THE NIGHT PRAYING / LUKE 6:12

Repeatedly, Jesus came away from the chaos of the crowds to be alone with His Father in prayer, especially at times when He had to make major decisions (Luke 5:16).

  1. An entire night of intense prayer produced tremendous results (James 5:16). Following the night of prayer, Jesus chose the twelve, who would be His closest followers and “apostles” (ones specially commissioned to be pioneer leader in the early church, Luke 6:13-16), healed many who were sick (Luke 6:17-19) and preached His most quoted sermon (Luke 6:20-49).
  2. If Jesus, the perfect Son of God, spent a night in prayer in order to make an important decision, how much more do we, with all our weaknesses and failings, need to spend much time in prayer and in personal interaction with our heavenly Father.

JESUS AND THE SABBATH / LUKE 6:2-10

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Luke 6:2-10

JESUS AND THE SABBATH / LUKE 6:2-10

The Pharisees accused Jesus of breaking the Sabbath (the day God reserved for rest and worship; (Exodus 20:8), but they were really the ones who missed the point of God’s law by their own extreme interpretation of it. Jesus explains that observing the Sabbath must never become a ritual that causes people to overlook legitimate human needs. Jesus desires to meet those needs, and He is the Lord of the Sabbath (Luke 6:5). The Sabbath should be a benefit to people – a time of physical and spiritual refreshment when we can come away from our daily routine to worship Christ, the Lord over all of life. Yet, Jesus’ words and actions (Luke 6:6-10) teach us that the Lord’s Day should be an opportunity to help those in need, spiritually as well as physically.

HUSBANDS LOVE YOUR WIVES / EPHESIANS 5:25-28

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Ephesians 5:25-28

Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; 26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, 27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. 28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.

HUSBANDS LOVE YOUR WIVES / EPHESIANS 5:25-28

Submission in the marriage relationship is not the attitude required only of wives (Ephesians 5:21). In fact, as the head of the home, the husband is to take the lead in submitting to and serving the best interests of his wife and children. He must help his wife fulfill her God-given roles at home, in the church and in all aspects of life. The fact that the husband is called to love his wife “just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her” is an extreme challenge. It is hardly possible for any human to love even Christ as much as He loves us, and yet the husband is charged with the responsibility of loving his wife in that way. Of course, this does not mean that we are to love any person over God, but rather that the husband is to follow Christ’s example of showing self-sacrificing love for his wife. In this way, the husband is actually called to a more extreme expression of submission and devotion than is the wife.

HUSBAND … HEAD / EPHESIANS 5:23

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Ephesians 5:23

For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.

HUSBAND … HEAD / EPHESIANS 5:23

God has established the family as the basic and foundational unit in society. Every family must have a leader. For this reason, God has assigned to the husband the responsibility of being the head of the wife and family (Ephesians 5:23-33; 6:4). His headship must be exercised in love, gentleness and consideration for his wife and family (Ephesians 5:25-30; 6:4). The husband’s God-given responsibility as “head of the wife” includes:

  1. Provision for the family’s spiritual and domestic needs (Ephesians 5:23-24; Genesis 3:16-19; 1 Timothy 5:8).
  2. Love, protection and interest in her welfare in the same way that Christ loves the church (Ephesians 5:23-33).
  3. Honor, understanding, appreciation and thoughtfulness (Colossians 3:19: 1 Peter 3:7).
  4. Absolute faithfulness to the marriage relationship (Ephesians 5:31; Matthew 5:27-28).

WIVES SUBMIT / EPHESIANS 5:22

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Ephesians 5:22

Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.

WIVES SUBMIT / EPHESIANS 5:22

The wife is given the God-appointed task of helping and submitting (Ephesians 5:21) to her husband (Ephesians 5:22-24). The meaning of “submit” as used here is not referring in a strict sense to obedience, which is never used in Scripture with respect to a wife’s relationship to her husband, Her God-given duty to her husband includes love (Titus 2:4), respect (Ephesians 5:33; 1 Peter 3:1-2), assistance (Genesis 2:18), purity (Titus 2:5; 1 Peter 3:2), submissiveness (Ephesians 5:22; 1 Peter 3:5), development of a gentle and quiet spirit (1 Peter 3:4) and being a good mother (Titus 2:4) and caretaker of the home (1 Timothy 2:15; 5:14; Titus 2:5). Submitting to a husband “as to the Lord” does not put the husband in the place of the Lord but shows that the wife ought to submit to her husband as an act of submission to the Lord. In this way, God sees the wife’s actions toward her husband as an actual part of her obedience to Jesus (Galatians 3:28; 1 Timothy 2:13, 15; Titus 2:4).
