YOUR EYES ARE TOO PURE / HABAKKUK 1:13

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Habakkuk 1:13

Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity: wherefore lookest thou upon them that deal treacherously, and holdest thy tongue when the wicked devoureth the man that is more righteous than he?

YOUR EYES ARE TOO PURE / HABAKKUK 1:13

This verse does not mean that God overlooks evil; after all, He is omniscient (“all-knowing”) and sees everything. The fact that He realizes everything that is going on, however, does not mean that God approves of evil. What confused Habakkuk was this: God’s use of the wicked Babylonians made it seem like He was tolerating their sin while punishing Judah; and even though Judah was behaving wickedly, it was still not as corrupt as Babylon.

(KJV) Habakkuk 1:12

Art thou not from everlasting, O Lord my God, mine Holy One? we shall not die. O Lord, thou hast ordained them for judgment; and, O mighty God, thou hast established them for correction.

ARE YOU NOT FROM EVERLASTING? / Habakkuk 1:12

Habakkuk was appalled that God would use such a cruel and defiant nation to attack Judah. Babylon was so arrogant about its military might that it was almost like a god to them (Habakkuk 1:11). Yet the prophet was confident that God would not allow them to totally destroy his own people. Such a destructive plan would work against God’s purpose to use Israel to reveal His plan of salvation to the entire human race.

(KJV) Habakkuk 1:5-11

I AM GOING TO DO SOMETHING / HABAKKUK 1:5-11

God answered Habakkuk by telling him He already had plans to punish Judah for its sins. He would use the completely unmerciful and ungodly Babylonians to carry out judgment on His people. (The Babylonians had gained their independence from Assyria in 626 B.C. and destroyed Assyrian power completely in 612 – 605 B.C. The speed with which they conquered other nations was legendary [verse 8], and they sent into exile the people that they conquered [Habakkuk 1:9], just like the Assyrians before them.) The thought that God would possibly use such wicked and ungodly people to punish Judah was shocking to the prophet and unbelievable to God’s people.

HOW LONG … MUST I CALL FOR HELP / HABAKKUK 1:2-4

Habakkuk had been praying that God would do something to stop the social corruption and spiritual rebellion that he saw among his own people. Yet God seemed to be doing nothing but tolerating violence, injustice and the mistreatment of godly people. His questions dealt with issues that have totally confused God’s faithful people throughout history: “Why does God wait so long to punish evil?” and “Why are our prayers not answered sooner?” Notice, however, that these “complaints,” or questions, did not stem from a cynical (distrusting), disgruntled or defiant attitude, but from a submissive and sincere heart of faith in God that truly longed for answers.

HABAKKUK / HABAKKUK 1:1

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Habakkuk 1:1

The burden which Habakkuk the prophet did see.

HABAKKUK / HABAKKUK 1:1

Habakkuk prophesied to the kingdom of Judah between the time when the Babylonians defeated the Assyrians at Nineveh (612 B.C.). By that time, Babylon had become the leading world power.

  1. The book is unique in that it is not a prophecy addressed directly to God’s people in Israel or Judah, but rather a dialogue, or conversation, between the prophet and God. Habakkuk asked the question: “Why doesn’t God do something about the evil that has completely filled Judah?” God responded by revealing that He was sending the Babylonians to punish Judah.
  2. This answer only confused the prophet more. So, he asked, “Why would God allow a nation even more wicked and cruel than Judah to deliver judgment on His people? By the end of the conversation, Habakkuk learned to trust God more and live by faith in God’s plans, no matter what the circumstances might be.

DO NOT BELIEVE WHAT HE WROTE / JOHN 5:47

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) John 5:47

But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?

DO NOT BELIEVE WHAT HE WROTE / JOHN 5:47

This passage is important in recognizing Jesus’ view of the Old Testament. He indeed believed that Moses wrote the Pentateuch (Moses recorded God’s activities, Israel’s history and God’s law in the first five books of the Old Testament). A lesson from this statement that we still need today is this: if one does not believe in the God-given, Holy Spirit-directed inspiration and truthfulness of the Old Testament writings, he or she will not believe or submit to the authority of Jesus’ words and the New Testament writings. All of God’s written Word is a testimony that points to Christ and the purposes He would fulfill (Acts 24:14).

ACCEPT PRAISE FROM ONE ANOTHER / JOHN 5:44

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) John 5:44

How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?

ACCEPT PRAISE FROM ONE ANOTHER / JOHN 5:44

Those who are truly devoted to Christ and dependent on Him will not be motivated by the love of praise or esteem from other people. They will not be slaves to others’ opinions. Their goal will be to please God and fulfill His purposes for their lives. Those who get into a bad habit of depending on praise from others are really setting themselves up as idols (any object or anyone that is worshiped as a god). But only God deserves our praise. Desiring honor from other humans more than desiring honor from God is to reject Christ’s message and make genuine faith impossible (Romans 2:29).

Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. 40 And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.

YOU DILIGENTLY STUDY / JOHN 5:39-40

Though many of the Jews knew what God’s Word in the Old Testament said, they did not understand what it really meant (John 5:38). The Jewish leaders even studied the Scriptures in great detail, and yet they did not understand or accept the One of whom the Word spoke. This shows us that simply knowing what God’s Word says, or even believing and following it to a degree, is not enough to save us spiritually. We must accept Christ personally and devote our lives to following Him. This includes living by the principles and purposes revealed in His Word.

THOSE WHO HAVE DONE GOOD – RISE TO LIVE – THOSE WHO HAVE DONE EVIL / JOHN 5:29

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) John 5:29

And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

THOSE WHO HAVE DONE GOOD – RISE TO LIVE – THOSE WHO HAVE DONE EVIL / JOHN 5:29

THOSE WHO HAVE DONE GOOD

According to God’s Word, judgment is based on actions and conduct. That is because one’s actions over time represent his or her true beliefs, attitudes and inner spiritual condition. This means that we will be judged not by our claims to believe or have faith in Christ, but by how we have lived in response to Christ and our faith in Him (Matthew 12:36-37: 16:27; Romans 2:6-10; 14:12; 1 Corinthians 3:13-15; 2 Corinthians 5:10; Ephesians 6:8; Colossians 3:25; Revelation 2:23; Revelation 20:11-13; Revelation 22:12). This does not mean that our good works are what save us, but our actions will show our faith and be a natural outflow of our relationship with Jesus (Ephesians 2:10; Titus 2:14; 3:8-9) – or condemned by refusing to trust and surrender to Christ – but we will be judged and rewarded according to our actions (Ephesians 6:8; 1 Peter 1:17; Revelation 20:11-13).

RISE TO LIVE

The New Testament does not teach that there is a single, simultaneous (occuring at the same time) resurrection for all the dead.

  1. It speaks of a resurrection of many “holy people” occurring immediately after Jesus’ resurrection (Matthew 27:52-53), of a resurrection occurring at the time of the rupture or “catching up” of the church by Christ (1 Corinthians 15:51-52), of a resurrection occurring one thousand years after the “first resurrection” of Revelation 20:6 (after the millennial reign of Christ on earth, Revelation 20:4).
  2. It is possible that “the first resurrection” includes the resurrection of all Christ’s people following His return to earth to defeat the forces of the antichrist and before He begins His thousand-year reign on earth (Revelation 20:4-6). In this case, the resurrection of Revelation 20:4-6 would complete the first resurrection.

THOSE WHO HAVE DONE EVIL

Immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires, corruption, deceit and other sinful behaviors have no place in the lives of Christ’s followers (Colossians 3:5). People are defying the teachings of Christ and promoting deception if they teach that those who “believe” in Christ will still receive eternal life even though they live outside the boundaries set in God’s Word. This belief leads to a false sense of “eternal security” (1 Corinthians 6:9-10; Galatians 5:19-21: Ephesians 5:5; Ephesians 5:6). While nothing else can remove us from God’s love or take us out of His hands (John 10:28; Romans 8:31-35), we can remove ourselves from eternal life and His care by choosing to disobey and defy His Word. We must pay attention to the words of Jesus: “those who have done evil will rise to be condemned.”

HEARS … BELIEVES – WILL NOT BE CONDEMNED / JOHN 5:24

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) John 5:24

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

HEARS … BELIEVES – WILL NOT BE CONDEMNED / JOHN 5:24

HEARS … BELIEVES

Jesus describes those who have eternal life (who have a personal relationship with God and will live with Him forever) and who will not be condemned as “whoever hears … and believers.” The verbs “hears” Greek akouon, from akouo) and “believes” (Greek pisteouoon, from pisteuoo) are present participles, which show ongoing action (“whoever is, or keeps on, hearing and believing”). This means that the “hearing” and “believing” are not acts of a single moment, but actions that must continue (John 1:12). To “hear” in Biblical terms suggests listening and responding; it means putting into practice what you learn. Christ affirms that having eternal life is conditional on a living and growing faith rather than on a momentary decision at some point in the past (John 1:12; John 4:14).

WILL NOT BE CONDEMNED

“Condemned” (Greak krisis) is used in the sense of being headed for eternal spiritual death. Christ’s followers will not be condemned with the rest of the world (1 Corinthians 11:32). However, they will still be held accountable for their actions and judged according to their faithfulness with the opportunities and resources God gave them while on earth.
