PRAY CONTINUALLY / 1 THESSALONIANS 5:16-17

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Thessalonians 5:16-17

Rejoice evermore. 17 Pray without ceasing.

PRAY CONTINUALLY / 1 THESSALONIANS 5:16-17

To “pray continually” does not mean to be constantly speaking to God or repeating formal prayers. Prayer is simply communicating with God, which suggests a two-way conversation (the process of talking and listening). For our blessing, the most important part of this communication is what He says to us. This means that we must take time and learn to listen to God in prayer. That is how we hear His answers. Therefore, praying continually has more to do with an open heart and mind (that stay in contact with God) than with an open mouth. This allows us to truly go throughout every part of our day in communication with God, open to His voice and prepared to follow His guidance. Continual prayer also involves speaking to God “in the Spirit on all occasions with all kindness of prayers and requests” (Ephesians 6:18; Luke 18:1; Romans 12:12; Colossians 4:2).

MAKE SURE NOBODY PAYS BACK WRONG FOR WRONG / 1 THESSALONIANS 5:15

(KJV) 1 Thessalonians 5:15

See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men.

MAKE SURE NOBODY PAYS BACK WRONG FOR WRONG / 1 THESSALONIANS 5:15

Retaliation and revenge are not acceptable options for Christians (Romans 12:17; 1 Peter 3:9). God is the final judge and will repay individuals for their wrong (Romans 12:19; Hebrews 10:30). This does not mean that Christians must allow people to take advantage of them, nor does it mean that they should not take proper action against sin or injustice. It does mean, however, that Christians must follow Jesus’ instruction to “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you” (Luke 6:27, 35) and to forgive others as He has forgiven us (Matthew 6:14-15; 18:35; Mark 11:25; Luke 6:37; 17:3-4; Matthew 6:15; 18:35; Luke 17:3).

LIVE TOGETHER WITH HIM / 1 THESSALONIANS 5:10

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Thessalonians 5:10

Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.

LIVE TOGETHER WITH HIM / 1 THESSALONIANS 5:10

Paul identifies our hope of salvation and our rescue from the day of God’s wrath with Christ’s sacrificial death for our sins and His return to take us to live with Him forever. As Christians, we have this hope whether we remain alive (“are awake”) or pass from this life through physical death (“are asleep”) before Christ returns (1 Thessalonians 4:13).

NOT APPOINT US TO SUFFER WRATH / 1 THESSALONIANS 5:9

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Thessalonians 5:9

For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,

NOT APPOINT US TO SUFFER WRATH / 1 THESSALONIANS 5:9

One reason why the hope of Christ’s return is such a comfort to Christians (1 Thessalonians 4:17; 1 Thessalonians 4:18) is that His return means rescue from God’s terrible wrath (the judgments of “the day of the Lord”; 1 Thessalonians 5:2; 1 Thessalonians 5:3; Revelation 6:16-17; 14:10, 19; 15:1, 7; 16:1, 19; 19:15).

BREASTPLATE – HELMET / 1 THESSALONIANS 5:8

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Thessalonians 5:8

But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.

BREASTPLATE – HELMET / 1 THESSALONIANS 5:8

A breastplate was a large piece of armor that protected the chest of a soldier during battle. Having “faith and love as a breastplate” means that a loving and trusting relationship with Christ and a life that shows His love to others will protect one’s spiritual heart. Having the “hope of salvation as a helmet” (Ephesians 6:13) implies that a believer’s mind would be protected by the assurance of being spared from God’s wrath and spending eternity with Christ. This same confidence should allow us to stay focused on Chrit’s return, be self-controlled and be at peace while we wait for Him.

LET US BE ALERT / SELF CONTROLLED / 1 THESSAIONIANS 5:6

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Thessalonians 5:6

Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.

LET US BE ALERT / SELF CONTROLLED / 1 THESSAIONIANS 5:6

LET US BE ALERT

“Be alert” (Greek gregoreo) means more than simply focusing one’s attention at the moment. This word carries the sense that one is to “stay awake and keep watch.” Paul is not challenging his readers to “be alert” for the “day of the Lord” (1 Thessalonians 5:2), but rather to be spiritually prepared in order to escape that day of wrath – God’s justified anger, judgment and punishment (1 Thessalonians 2:11-12; Luke 21:34-36).

  1. If we want to escape God’s wrath (1 Thessalonians 5:3), we must remain spiritually awake and morally alert. We must preserve in faith, love and the hope of full and complete salvation (1 Thessalonians 5:8-9; Luke 21:36: Ephesians 6:11) that comes by holding fast to our commitment to Christ until He returns.
  2. Since God’s faithful people will be protected from His wrath (1 Thessalonians 5:2), they need not fear the day of the Lord. With expectation, they can “wait for His Son from heaven…Jesus, who rescues us from the coming wrath” (1 Thessalonians 1:10).

SELF-CONTROLLED

The word “self-controlled” (Greek nepho) had two meanings in New Testament times.

  1. The literal meaning refers to “a state of abstinence from wine,” “to drink no wine,” “to be completely unaffected by wine” or “to be sober.” It also carries a meaning of alertness or self-control. Here it suggests spiritual alertness and discipline in every aspect of life, so as not to get caught up in worldly pleasures, worries or spiritual distractions that could cause believers to become unfaithful to the Lord and unprepared for His return.
  2. The context here suggests that Paul was not excluding the literal meaning and implications of this word. The phrase “let us be alert and self-controlled” is contrasted with the phrase in the following verse, “those who get drunk, get drunk at night” (1 Thessalonians 5:7). In this way, Paul’s contrast of nepho with physical drunkenness would indicate that he was including the literal meaning of “abstinence from wine.” Compare Jesus’ statement about those who eat and drink with drunkards and are caught unaware by His return (Matthew 24:48-51).

YOU BROTHERS ARE NOT IN DARKNESS / 1 THESSAIONIANS 5:4

True Christians do not live in the spiritual darkness of rebellion and sin (their own God-defying way). They belong to the “day” that comes before God’s appointed night of wrath and judgment, which His people are destined to escape (1 Thessalonians 5:8-9)

PEACE AND SAFETY / 1 THESSALONIANS 5:3

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Thessalonians 5:3

For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

PEACE AND SAFETY / 1 THESSALONIANS 5:3

It is the unbeliever – one who is not spiritually saved and does not have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ – who will be saying, “Peace and safety.” This could mean that the world will be expecting and hoping for peace. The day of the Lord and its worldwide distress will come on them suddenly, destroying any hope for peace and security.

THE DAY OF THE LORD / LIKE A THIEF IN THE NIGHT / 1 THESSALONIANS 5:2

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Thessalonians 5:2

For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.

THE DAY OF THE LORD / LIKE A THIEF IN THE NIGHT / 1 THESSALONIANS 5:2

THE DAY OF THE LORD

The “day of the Lord” normally does not refer to a 24-hour day, but rather to an extended period of time when God’s enemies are overthrown (Isaiah 2:12-21; 13:9-16; 34:1-4; Jeremiah 46:10; Joel 1:15 – 2:11, 28: 3:9, 12-17; Amos 5:18-20; Zechariah 14:1-3), followed by Christ’s earthly reign (Zephaniah 3:14-17; Revelation 20:4-7).

  1. This “day” begins following the rapture of the church, when Christ’ followers will be taken suddenly from the earth to escape the end-time judgments to come on the world (1 Thessalonians 5:3). The period of those judgments – referred to as the “great tribulation” – included within the day of the Lord (Revelation 6 – 19; Revelation 6:1). This time of widespread distress and judgment ends with Christ’s literal return to earth to defeat the forces of the antichrist and destroy all of God’s enemies (Joel 1:14, 2:30-31; Zephaniah 1:7; Revelation 16:16; 19:11-21).
  2. The day of the Lord will occur at a time when people are hoping for peace and safety (1 Thessalonians 5:3).
  3. The “day” will not come as a surprise to faithful believers – “like a thief in the night” – because they have accepted Christ’s salvation (His forgiveness, new life and a personal relationship with Him) and will be spared from God’s wrath. The faithful will be ready for the Lord’s return because they are alert and self-controlled, living in faith, love and purity (1 Thessalonians 5:4-9).
  4. Faithful believers will be rescued from this “coming wrath” (1 Thessalonians 1:10) through the Lord Jesus Christ (1 Thessalonians 5:9) when He comes to take the faithful people (His church) back to heaven with Him (1 Thessalonian 4:17; John 14:3; Revelations 3:10).
  5. The day of the Lord will end with Christ’s millennial (thousand-year) reign of peace on earth and will bring time as we know it to a close (Revelation 20). The “day” will actually end following Christ’s millennial kingdom (Revelation 20:4-10) and the final judgment of the wicked (Revelation 20:11-15). Then the new heaven and new earth will be established (2 Peter 3:13; Revelation 21:1).
  6. For God’ enemies, “the day of the Lord” means terrible destruction and judgment; but for God’s faithful people, it means rescue and reward.

LIKE A THIEF IN THE NIGHT

This metaphor, or symbolic description, means that the time when the day of the Lord begins is uncertain and unexpected – particularly for those who are unprepared and do not have a personal relationship with Christ. There is no way one can set a date for it (Matthew 24:42-44 on Jesus’ teaching on the unexpected time of His coming for the church).

TIMES AND DATES / 1 THESSALONIANS 5:1

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Thessalonians 5:1

But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you.

TIMES AND DATES / 1 THESSALONIANS 5:1

There have always been some who have tried in vain to determine the time or date of Christ’s return, even though Jesus said that “no one knows about that day or hour” (Matthew 24:36, 42, 44; Luke 12:40). Having spoken about Christ’s sudden return to take His followers from the earth (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; 1 Thessalonians 4:13; 1 Thessalonians 4:17; 1 Thessalonians 4:18), Paul now turns to the subject of God’s judgment on all those who reject salvation through faith in Christ. In speaking of the last days, He refers to a terrible time called “the day of the Lord” (1 Thessalonians 5:2). Christ’s sudden return to take His faithful followers to heaven (1 Thessalonians 4:17) marks the beginning of “the day of the Lord,” and it will arrive at an unexpected time, just as Christ Himself taught (Matthew 24:42, 44).
