And Moses returned unto the Lord, and said, Lord, wherefore hast thou so evil entreated this people? why is it that thou hast sent me?

IS THIS WHY YOU SENT ME? / EXODUS 5:22

Moses either ignored or forgot what God had told him earlier about Pharaoh’s responses (Exodus 3:19-20; 4:21). He was disappointed because obeying God seemed to bring trouble rather than immediate success. God’s people today must keep in mind that God’s Word says, “we must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God” (Acts 14:22; John 16:33; 1 Thessalonians 3:3; 2 Timothy 3:12).

THIS IS WHAT THE LORD – THE GOD OF ISRAEL SAYS / EXODUS 5:1

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Exodus 5:1

And afterward Moses and Aaron went in, and told Pharaoh, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Let my people go, that they may hold a feast unto me in the wilderness.

THIS IS WHAT THE LORD – THE GOD OF ISRAEL SAYS / EXODUS 5:1

The story of the exodus basically describes a conflict between two gods: the Lord and Pharaoh, since Pharoah was believed to be a human form of the sun god Re in the Egyptian religion. Pharaoh questioned the power of Israel’s God (Exodus 5:2). Since Pharaoh had enslaved Israel, he mistakenly reasoned that he must be more powerful than Israel’s God. The ten plagues were the Lord’s way of showing His people that He was more powerful than any and all Egyptian gods. For example, the Nile, the sun and the fogs all represented Egyptian deities (having divine or god-like characteristics). But the Lord God of the Hebrew people defeated them all.

JOINED WITH THE LORD IN THAT DAY / ZECHARIAH 2:10-12

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Zechariah 2:10-12

Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion: for, lo, I come, and I will dwell in the midst of thee, saith the Lord. 11 And many nations shall be joined to the Lord in that day, and shall be my people: and I will dwell in the midst of thee, and thou shalt know that the Lord of hosts hath sent me unto thee. 12 And the Lord shall inherit Judah his portion in the holy land, and shall choose Jerusalem again.

JOINED WITH THE LORD IN THAT DAY / ZECHARIAH 2:10-12

“That day” refers to the time when Jesus Christ will reign on earth at the end of history. Then Zion, God’s faithful people of Israel along with the Gentiles (people from all other nations who are not Israelite of Jewish), will be considered God’s people. (This will represent the total fulfillment of God’s promise to Abraham in Genesis 12:3.) They will all enjoy the benefit of God’s presence among them. The reference to the “holy land” (Zechariah 2:12) is the only one of its kind in the Bible. This land was holy because it represented the site of God’s throne on earth and the place where the great King of all the earth will reign among His people. (The temple of God’s presence had already been established there and now was being rebuilt. One day Christ will return to reign on earth with Jerusalem as His capital city.)

TOUCHES THE APPLE OF HIS EYE / ZECHARIAH 2:8-9

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Zechariah 2:8-9

For thus saith the Lord of hosts; After the glory hath he sent me unto the nations which spoiled you: for he that toucheth you toucheth the apple of his eye. For, behold, I will shake mine hand upon them, and they shall be a spoil to their servants: and ye shall know that the Lord of hosts hath sent me.

TOUCHES THE APPLE OF HIS EYE / ZECHARIAH 2:8-9

Throughout the Bible, Zion is often used as a reference to Jerusalem, or God’s city. The name was also used as a general reference to God’s “dwelling place,” or central place of worship on earth (Psalms 9:11; 74:2; Joel 3:21). At times, it can refer to the renewed and restored Jerusalem in which Christ will reign on earth at the end of history (Isaiah 52:8; 62:1-12). It also refers to God’s eternal heavenly city. However, in the passage, Zion (Zechariah 2:7) refers to the portion of God’s people who came through the exile in Babylon, particularly the ones who remained faithful to Him and would continue to carry out His purposes on earth. They are the apple (pupil or center portion) of God’s eye and the source of His affection (Psalms 17:8). God’s faithful followers today are just as important and loved as much as God’s people were in Old Testament times. We too are under His protective care and concern.

FLEE FROM THE LAND OF THE NORTH / ZECHARIAH 2:6

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Zechariah 2:6

Ho, ho, come forth, and flee from the land of the north, saith the Lord: for I have spread you abroad as the four winds of the heaven, saith the Lord.

FLEE FROM THE LAND OF THE NORTH / ZECHARIAH 2:6

Zechariah’s instruction here can be interpreted on several different levels.

  1. The rebuilding of the temple was a signal for more of the exiled Jews to return from Babylon (Zechariah 2:7; actually, Babylon had been defeated by the Medo-Persians who now controlled the empire and allowed the Jews to return to their homeland).
  2. The Old Testament prophets also saw a future return of Jews in the last days (the end times of history) that will reach its climax or highest point, when Christ returns to earth to establish His millennial kingdom (Zechariah 2:7-9). It is then that He will reign among His people for a thousand years at the end of history (Revelation 20).
  3. We also can apply this to our lives today as a challenge to avoid idolatry (worshiping false gods or giving anything priority over the One True God), immorality, wickedness, occult practices and all other forms of evil that are common in today’s world system.

For I, saith the Lord, will be unto her a wall of fire round about, and will be the glory in the midst of her.

I MYSELF WILL BE A WALL … ITS GLORY / Zechariah 2:5

In the millennial kingdom the city will not need walls, for the Lord Himself will be a wall of fire, or wall of protection, around it (Isaiah 4:5). Even more important, God will dwell among His people; and His holy presence will fill the entire city (Ezekiel 43:1-7). Above all else, the church today must seek after a deep and ever-growing relationship with God so that His presence and glory are evident and active in worship services, ministries and the individual lives of God’s people.

(KJV) Zechariah 2:1

MAN WITH A MEASURING LINE / ZECHARIAH 2:1

Jerusalem was still very much defeated physically and spiritually at the end of the Babylonian exile. The number of those who returned to their homeland in the first wave of restoration was relatively small (about 50,000). God encouraged them by telling them that He was not finished with Jerusalem; He would make it the most glorious place on earth. This third vision looks ahead to the millennial kingdom (when Christ will reign on earth in perfect peace for a thousand years at the end of history, Revelation 20). During that time, the city will have no walls and will overflow with people.

THE LORD WAS ABOUT TO KILL HIM / EXODUS 4:24

Moses had neglected to perform the covenant sign of circumcision (Genesis 17:11) on his own son. Circumcision is the cutting away of part or all the foreskin of the penis. This was a clear act of disobedience by Moses and his wife (Exodus 4:24-25; Genesis 17:11). God may have given Moses some life-threatening condition until he had his son circumcised. This incident shows how God’s special purpose for an individual depends on his or her obedience to God (1 Peter 1:10).

ISRAEL MY FIRSTBORN / EXODUS 4:22

“Firstborn” is a name God uses to indicate His special love and relationship with Israel. Later, God would give a clearer understanding of this relationship when He claimed that David’s royal line was His Son (2 Samuel 7:14; Psalms 2:7). Eventually Jesus, who came through David’s descendants, is called God’s only Son – His firstborn (Luke 1:35; Luke 3:22; Hebrews 1:5-13).

And the Lord said unto him, Who hath made man’s mouth? or who maketh the dumb, or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? have not I the Lord?

WHO MAKES HIM BLIND? / EXODUS 4:11

God has the power to make someone deaf or blind, or to heal the deaf or blind. This does not mean that every person who is mute (cannot speak), deaf or blind is that way because God wanted or caused the situation. Such conditions, like all disease and sickness, are originally the result of Satan’s activity and sin’s entrance into the world through Adam (Genesis 3:1-24). Suffering does not necessarily occur because the individual has sinned, but in a sinful world sickness and suffering exist and affect everyone in some way (John 9:2-3).
