(KJV) Exodus 7:12

For they cast down every man his rod, and they became serpents: but Aaron’s rod swallowed up their rods.

IT BECAME A SNAKE / EXODUS 7:12

  1. The magicians’ staffs also turned into snakes but through demonic power. The hearts and minds of the Egyptians were turned strongly toward magic, the supernatural and mysterious (occultism), the work of evil spirits (spiritism) and sorcery (the work of wizards or witches) as part of their religion. But when Aaron’s staff, or walking stick, swallowed their staffs, the God of Israel was showing that His power was greater than the power of Egypt’s gods.
  2. In the final days before Christ’s return, Satan will display miracles through false ministers within the church and through the antichrist (2 Timothy 3:8). Christians must not assume that the miracles they see are always evidence of the true God at work (Revelation 16:14; Revelation 19:20).

I WILL HARDEN PHARAOH’S HEART / EXODUS 7:3-4

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Exodus 7:3-4

And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and multiply my signs and my wonders in the land of Egypt.

I WILL HARDEN PHARAOH’S HEART / EXODUS 7:3

God did not force Pharaoh to resist Him. Pharaoh’s heart was already hard toward God. So when God confronted the stubborn, rebellious attitude in his heart, Pharaoh resisted even more. This additional hardening was a punishment for Pharaoh’s determined rebellion and opposition toward God (Exodus 5:2; 7:13-14, 22; 8:15, 19, 32; 9:7).

  1. God was demonstrating a principle that applies to all who resist Him and refuse to turn from their own stubborn way. There comes a point where God finally turns people over to the full effects and consequences of their sinful desires (Romans 1:24) and actually hardens their hearts even more (Romans 9:18). People in this dangerous condition are often spiritually blinded to God’s love and the truth of His Word (2 Thessalonians 2:10). God often allows this so that a person will come to a point of hopelessness and finally turn to God for help and salvation (1 Corinthians 5:5).
  2. Notice how the judgments of the early plagues softened Pharaoh’s heart a little. But when God removed each plague, Pharaoh’s heart hardened again. This shows that Pharaoh resisted God and hardened his own heart whenever God showed mercy (Exodus 8:8-15).

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 2 Thessalonians 2:13

But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:

FROM THE BEGINNING GOD CHOSE YOU / 2 THESSALONIANS 2:13

This phrase does not mean that God determined ahead of time who will be spiritually saved and who will be condemned. The phrase has to do with what God has determined will happen to those who willingly accept His salvation and follow Him, as well as what will finally happen to those who willfully refuse to accept and follow Him.

(KJV) 2 Thessalonians 2:12

That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

DELIGHTED IN WICKEDNESS / 2 THESSALONIANS 2:12

Delighting in things that offend God, rejecting His standards of truth and purity and refusing to accept and love the truth (2 Thessalonians 2:9-10) will be the deciding factor in God’s judgment in the last days.

  1. Those who reject God’s truth, participate in evil and entertain themselves with immorality (2 Timothy 3:1) are destined to experience God’s wrath (His justified anger, judgment and punishment). They will be “given over” to demonic deception and controlled by the power of darkness and evil (Luke 23:35; Romans 1:32; 1 Timothy 4:1).
  2. Those experiencing God’s condemning judgment during the “day of the Lord: (2 Thessalonians 2:2) will include not only unbelievers (those who never accepted Christ’s forgiveness and entrusted their lives to Him), but also those who have turned from and rejected the faith they one had in Christ. They chose to enjoy sin instead of enjoying God. They refused to take a stand against ungodliness and, as a result, are swept along with the tide of wickedness in the world in the last days (2 Thessalonians 2:3; 2 Thessalonians 2:7; 2 Timothy 4:3-4).

SENDS THEM A POWERFUL DELUISION / 2 THESSALONIANS 2:11

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 2 Thessalonians 2:11

And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:

SENDS THEM A POWERFUL DELUISION / 2 THESSALONIANS 2:11

After God’s restraining influence is “taken out of the way” (2 Thessalonians 2:8) and the lawless one is revealed, people who have “refused to love the truth and so be saved” (2 Thessalonians 2:9-10) will come under “a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie” (Romans 1:25). As a result, they will be eternally lost (without hope of spiritual salvation, eternally separated from God).

  1. These people will consist of all those inside or outside the church who, after adequately hearing the truth of God’s Word, have intentionally refused to love the truth and have chosen instead to delight in the world’s wickedness (2 Thessalonians 2:9-10; 2 Thessalonians 2:12).
  2. God will give these people over (Romans 1:24, 26, 28) to a powerful delusion, or deception, so that they never again have an opportunity to believe the truth they refused to accept and love (2 Thessalonians 2:12). They are forever doomed to believe “the lie” (the claims of the lawless one and the deception of Satan).
  3. God sending the “powerful delusion” is part of His judgment on those who reject the truth. It is His assurance that they “will be condemned” (2 Thessalonians 2:12). For those who have heard and understood God’s Word yet have not loved its truth but have chosen instead to delight in wickedness and pursue the pleasure of sin, “no sacrifice for sins is left, but only a fearful expectation of judgment” (Hebrews 10:26-27).
  4. The opportunity for spiritual salvation during the tribulation period (after Christ has taken His followers out of the world) will be offered to those living during that time who have not yet had an adequate opportunity to hear and understand the message of Christ (Revelation 7:14; Revelation 11:3: Revelation 14:6-7). Those who proclaim the message of Christ during those days may include the 144,000 from the tribes of Israel (Revelation 7:4), the two witnesses (Revelation 11:3) and the angels (Revelation 14:6).

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 2 Thessalonians 2:7

For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.

SECRET POWER OF LAWLESSNESS IS ALREADY AT WORK / 2 THESSALONIANS 2:7

The “secret power of lawlessness” (or spirit of rebellion) is a behind-the-scenes activity of evil powers that has operated throughout the course of human history, preparing the way for the complete rebellion and the man of lawlessness.

  1. It is a completely evil and skillfully destructive process that deceives and entraps those who reject Christ and do not accept God’s complete truth. It also prepares many within the church to turn from true faith and to accept the lies that will be increasingly common in some elements of the church. It involves a spirit or movement against true Biblical faith and God’s moral law. It seeks freedom from all moral restraint, and it takes pleasure in all forms of rebellious behavior against God (2 Thessalonians 2:10-12).
  2. Though this spirit already existed in Paul’s day, it will be especially prevalent in the world – and in Christianity – in the end times (Matthew 24:11; 2 Timothy 4:3-4).

THAT DAY WILL NOT COME UNTIL / 2 THESSALONIANS 2:3

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 2 Thessalonians 2:3

Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

THAT DAY WILL NOT COME UNTIL / 2 THESSALONIANS 2:3

Paul explains the events that will signal the beginning of “the day of the Lord” (1 Thessalonians 5:2). He also refers to the destruction of the man of lawlessness and to the spiritual rebellion and ungodliness that will increase in the end times. The sequence of events is as follows:

  1. Throughout the entire church age (following Christ’s resurrection and ascension back to heaven [or some say from Pentecost, Acts 2] to the time when He takes His faithful followers from the earth), a “secret power of lawlessness” (2 Thessalonians 2:7) is at work, reminding us that the end is coming. Evil will become increasingly unrestrained (held back less and less) as history draws to a close.
  2. As that power becomes stronger, spiritual rebellion and abandonment of faith in the church will reach major proportions (2 Thessalonians 2:3; Matthew 24:12; 2 Timothy 4:3-4).
  3. The restrainer (“the one who now holds it back”) of the “secret power” is then taken out of the way (2 Thessalonians 2:6-7). That is to say, any godly restraint against wickedness will be lifted, and evil will be free to take an even greater toll on the people of the earth. This will likely happen at the same time as faithful believers in the church are being taken from the world.
  4. Next, “the man of lawlessness” – the antichrist – is revealed (2 Thessalonians 2:3-4, 7, 9-10).
  5. The apostasy (spiritual rebellion and faithlessness) reaches its climax in total rebellion against God and His Word. Because they reject Him, “God sends a powerful delusion” (2 Thessalonians 2:11), allowing people to come under the influence of extreme deception “so that they will believe the lie” (2 Thessalonians 2:9-11).
  6. Later, the man of lawlessness is destroyed, along with all “who have delighted in wickedness” (2 Thessalonians 2:12); this occurs at Christ’s return to earth after the tribulation period (2 Thessalonians 2:8; Revelation 19:20-21).

EASILY UNSETTLED OR ALARMED / 2 THESSALONIANS 2:2

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 2 Thessalonians 2:2

That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.

EASILY UNSETTLED OR ALARMED / 2 THESSALONIANS 2:2

The Thessalonians were alarmed because of what the false teachers were saying about “the day of the Lord” (2 Thessalonians 2:1; 1 Thessalonians 5:2). He tells them not to worry because the day of God’s wrath – His severe end-time judgments and punishment on the world at large – has not yet arrived. Two things will signal its arrival:

  1. There must come a specific “rebellion” – both in the church (as many people abandon faith in God) and in the world (as people increasingly reject and rebel against God and His standards).
  2. The “man of lawlessness” will be revealed (2 Thessalonians 2:3). Paul goes on to state that these two events will not be fulfilled until the one who holds it back “is taken out of the way” (2 Thessalonians 2:7).

Paul’s reference to “some prophecy, report or letter” may suggest that the false teaching was being passed on through illegitimate use of the spiritual gifts of tongues and interpretation or through prophecy (1 Corinthians 14:29).
