(KJV) 1 Thessalonians 4:13

But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.

ABOUT THOSE WHO FALL ASLEEP / 1 THESSALONIANS 4:13

This phrase refers to godly people who had died and whose souls were in heaven; it does not mean that the dead are unconscious in a sort of soul-sleep or that they are spirits without bodies (Philippians 1:21). The Thessalonians were concerned about their faithful Christian brothers and sisters who had already died and what part they might have in that great day of the Lord’s return that they anticipated with such hope (1 Thessalonians 1:10). They did not understand how the resurrection of Christians who had already died was related to living Christians being “caught up” (1 Thessalonians 4:14) to meet Christ at His coming (John 14:3). They thought that those who died before Christ’s return for the church (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17) would be resurrected at a much later time. Paul tells them that “the dead in Christ will rise” at the same time the Lord returns for the faithful of His churches.
