(KJV) 1 Peter 1:18

Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;

REDEEMED / 1 PETER 1:18

Essentially, “redeemed” implies being purchased, bought back or ransomed by the payment of a price. Jesus paid the highest price with His own life (1 Peter 1:19) to save us from the death penalty we deserved for sin (our own God-defying way). In this sense, being redeemed also means being liberated from the power of Satan and sin and restored to a right relationship with God through faith in Christ.

BE HOLY / 1 PETER 1:16

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Peter 1:16

Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.

BE HOLY / 1 PETER 1:16

God is holy, and what is true of God should be true of His people. Holiness, when referring to God, relates to His absolute purity, perfection, completeness and separation from evil. When applied to God’s people, holiness carries the thought of being morally pure, spiritually whole, separated from the ungodly ways of the world and set apart for love, service and worship to God (Leviticus 11:44). The goal is to be prepared for service to God (2 Timothy 2:20-21), which is positive action (1 Peter 1:13). Holiness is not only avoiding evil; it is also pursuing godliness (Hebrews 12:14). Holiness is a goal of our calling to follow Christ (Ephesians 1:4); it means being like God and being dedicated completely to Him (living to please Him; Romans 12:1; Ephesians 1:4; Ephesians 2:10; 1 John 3:2-3). We are made holy by the sanctifying (purifying, refining, developing, setting apart) work of the Holy Spirit (1 Peter 1:2), by the power of Christ’s sacrifice that frees us from the power of sin (Romans 6), by being renewed in the image of God (Colossians 3:10) and by the gift of God’s grace which enables us to obey God and live by His Word (Galatians 5:16, 22-23, 25; Titus 3:5; 2 Peter 1:9).

(KJV) 1 Peter 1:13

Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;

PREPARE YOUR MINDS FOR ACTION / 1 PETER 1:13

Notice that this extended passage on holiness (1 Peter 1:13-2:13) begins by telling believers to prepare for action. In the language of the first century, the original recipients of the letter would have gotten the image of literally gathering up their long, flowing outer garment and getting ready for physical activity. This is significant because many people consider holiness as a passive mindset, an attitude that seeks to avoid difficult things. While holiness does involve personal restraint and “self-control” in many areas of life, it also involves positive action. Being holy means to be set apart from ungodliness, but it also conveys the idea of active pursuit and freedom to fulfill God’s highest purposes for one’s life (1 Peter 1:16; Hebrews 12:14).

Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.

PREACHED … BY THE HOLY SPIRIT – EVEN ANGELS LONG TO LOOK / 1 PETER 1:12

PREACHED … BY THE HOLY SPIRIT

The Holy Spirit, who guided and inspired the Old Testament prophets and revealed to them the sufferings and glories that would be fulfilled in Christ (1 Peter 1:11), also inspired those who delivered the truth and teaching of Christ as we have it in the New Testament. In this way, the message of Christ and His Word originates from God, not from humans. On the day of Pentecost, the same Spirit who inspired the truth of the gospel – the “good news” and message of Christ (which Peter personally delivered to thousands on that day, Acts 2:14-36) – began to give power to all of Christ’s followers to proclaim the message (Acts 1:8; 2:4).

EVEN ANGELS LONG TO LOOK

The Greek word translated “to look into,” which literally means “to stop and look intently” (John 20:5, 11), reflects the level of interest and earnest desire of the angels.

Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.

SPIRIT OF CHRIST IN THEM / 1 PETER 1:11

Our faith is based on both the Word of God in the New Testament and God’s Word in the Old Testament. The Holy Spirit, through the Old Testament prophets, predicted Christ’s sufferings and the glories to follow (Genesis 49:10; Psalms 22; Isaiah 52:13 – 53:12; Daniel 2:44; Zechariah 9:9; Zechariah 9:10; Zechariah 13:7; Luke 24:26-27; 2 Peter 1:21). The Holy Spirit is called “the Spirit of Christ” because He spoke about Christ through the prophets, and he was sent from Christ (1 Peter 1:11; 1 Peter 1-12; John 16:7; 20:22; Acts 2:33). In fact, one of the Holy Spirit’s main roles of ministry today is to continue to reveal the truth of Christ and bring honor to Him (John 16:14).

God considers the faith of Christians today more remarkable than the faith of those who saw and heard Jesus in person, before or after His resurrection. Believers now, although they have never seen Him, love Him and yield their lives to Him. According to Jesus, there is a special blessing for “those who have not seen and yet have believed” (John 20:29). As we live by faith, we receive a special joy as God’s gift to us (Psalms 16:11; John 16:24; Romans 15:13; Galatians 5:22).

YOUR FAITH … PROVED GENUINE / 1 PETER 1:7

(KJV) 1 Peter 1:7

These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.

YOUR FAITH … PROVED GENUINE / 1 PETER 1:7

The theme of suffering for faith in Christ and doing good is emphasized throughout this letter (1 Peter 2:19-23; 3:14-17; 4:1-4, 12-19; 5:10). We are encouraged to rejoice in our difficulties and trials (1 Peter 1:6) because remaining faithful to Christ through tough times will purify our faith. Peter pictures a Christian’s suffering through “all kinds of trials” (1 Peter 1:6) like a fire that refines and purifies gold. But the Christian’s faith is far more precious and valuable because it results in praise, glory and honor both to the believers and to the Lord Jesus when He returns. When we go to be with Christ forever, we will find “that our present sufferings are not worth comparing to the glory that will be revealed in us” (Romans 8:18).

THROUGH FAITH ARE SHIELDED BY GOD’S POWER / 1 PETER 1:5

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.

THROUGH FAITH ARE SHIELDED BY GOD’S POWER / 1 PETER 1:5

This verse presents three truths concerning the spiritual safety and security of believers. This was a particularly relevant message for Peter’s original audience since many of them were experiencing strong persecution.

  1. Believers are “shielded by God’s power” against Satan’s forces of evil that seek to destroy their lives and rob them of their faith and spiritual salvation (2 Timothy 4:18; Jude 1:1, 24; Romans 8:31-39).
  2. The essential condition required for God’s protection is “faith.” His special guarding over our lives is not automatic or by chance; it comes into effect “through faith,” just as it is only “through faith” that believers are saved in the first place (Ephesians 2:8). It is our responsibility to maintain an active faith – one that completely surrenders to Christ, entrust the leadership of our lives to Him and pursues His purposes – if we expect to experience God’s continued guidance and protection (1 Peter 1:9; John 15:4, 6: Colossians 1:23; 2 Timothy 3:14-15; 4:7; Revelation 3:8; Revelation 3:10).
  3. The highest goal of God’s protection through our faith is “salvation.” Here salvation refers not simply to one’s initial decision to accept Christ, but also to the future aspect of salvation (Romans 1:16) – the receiving of an inheritance in heaven (1 Peter 1:4) and “the salvation of your souls” (1 Peter 1:9).

THE FOREKNOWLEDGE OF GOD – GOD THE FATHER … THE SPIRIT … JESUS CHRIIST / 1 PETER 1:2

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Peter 1:2

who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to be obedient to Jesus Christ and sprinkled with his blood:

THE FOREKNOWLEDGE OF GOD – GOD THE FATHER … THE SPIRIT … JESUS CHRIIST / 1 PETER 1:2

THE FOREKNOWLEDGE OF GOD

We are “chosen” to be God’s people according to His “foreknowledge.” This means that just as God knows all things, He has always known how He would work out His plan to save people spiritually and restore them to a right relationship with Him through the work of His Son, Jesus. This plan was in effect even before creation and human history began (1 Peter 1:20; Revelation 13:8).

  1. This does not mean that God determined who would be spiritually saved and who would be eternally condemned. Though God knows all things, He has given us a free will to choose whether or not to accept and follow Him. That is to say, though God knows the choices we will make, He does not cause us to make those particular choices.
  2. Foreknowledge, as used in this passage, is a synonym (a work of similar meaning, a substitute word) for God’s sovereign (supreme and independent) choice to love and set aside for Himself a people who would know Him personally and serve His purposes (Romans 8:29). In a general sense, this “people” is the church as a whole (all true followers of Christ; Ephesians 1:4; 2:4; 1 John 4:19). The church is the object of God’s love and choosing. God determined before human history that the church would be made up of people who are redeemed (purchased and restored to a right relationship with God) through Jesus’ sacrifice for sins so they would be prepared to serve His purposes. The church body includes only individual believers who respond to Christ by surrendering their lives to Him in faith and devotion. They continue to be part of God’s chosen people as they choose to remain loyal to Christ and live securely in His purposes for their lives (2 Peter 1:5, 10).

GOD THE FATHER … THE SPIRIT … JESUS CHRIST

All three persons of the Trinity (the one true God in three distinct, interrelated and unified persons) are described here as having part in God’s plan of redemption (spiritual salvation, restoration) and bringing people into a right and obedient relationship with God (Mark 1:11).
