(KJV) Luke 17:3

 Take heed to yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him.

IF HE REPENTS FORGIVE / LUKE 17:3

Concerning Jesus’ statement about forgiving, observe the following:

  1. Jesus is concerned that we maintain an attitude that desires to forgive and help those who offend us, rather than an attitude of revenge or hatred. 
  2. Forgiveness and the end result of a restored relationship cannot truly occur until the offending person acknowledges his or her wrong action and sincerely repents (expresses true sorrow and makes a complete change). However, our willingness to forgive should not depend on the other person’s attitude. Keep in mind that Jesus was not referring to the same offense being constantly repeated. In addition, forgiveness does not necessarily mean that we should foolishly trust someone who continually wrongs us or others. 
  3. We must forgive anyone who sincerely repents. Jesus’ statement about forgiving “seven times in a day” is not meant to give His approval of habitual sin (the same offense over and over). Nor is He saying that we must allow someone to severely mistreat or abuse us repeatedly. Instead, He teaches that we must maintain an attitude that is always ready to help and forgive others (Matthew 6:14; Matthew 6:15).

It were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he cast into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones.

MILLSTONE TIED AROUND HIS NECK / LUKE 17:2

A millstone was a heavy stone used for grinding grain. Jesus warns that it is one thing to choose to defy God for ourselves, but it is even more serious to influence or cause someone to sin because of our example, attitude or neglect of God’ standards. Such inconsiderate and defiant behavior will bring punishment so severe that it would be preferable to die before ever committing such sin (Matthew 18:6; Matthew 18:7).

Some people in Judah had a deistic view of God (the view that God is detached from His creation, that He simply lets the world run its course and is not actively involved in people’s lives). As a result, they believed that God would not punish their sin. 

  1. Those who had this attitude would come to a fearful discovery and understanding on the day of judgment, when they realized that God certainly did hold them accountable for their actions. 
  2. We too need to know that God is not distant from us or uncaring about our lives. He allows us to make our own choices, but He patiently watches over us, ready to direct our lives if we will depend on Him. God will reward those who yield their lives to Him and pursue a deeper relationship with Him; but He will punish those who reject or turn from Him to follow their own evil way (Romans 2:5-11).

Be silent before the Sovereign Lord, for the day of the Lord is near. The Lord has prepared a sacrifice; he has consecrated those he has invited.

THE DAY OF THE LORD / ZEPHANIAH 1:7

This prophecy applies first to Judah’s approaching destruction by the Babylonians in 605 B.C., and secondly to God’s worldwide judgment on all nations at the end of time (Isaiah 2:12; 13:6,9; Jeremiah 46:10; Ezekiel 13:5; Joel 1:15; 2:1; Amos 5:1). The final and decisive day of God’s wrath – His justified anger and judgment on all who oppose Him – is still ahead (Romans 2:5). It is related to the final return of Jesus Christ (Matthew 24:29-33; 1Thessalonians 5:2).

WORSHIP THE STARRY HOST

This form of idolatry (worshiping false gods or relying on things other than the one true God) is still popular today among those who seek direction for their lives through astrological signs and horoscope reading (Deuteronomy 4:19).

SWEAR BY THE LORD

Many people in Judah were participating in other forms of religion as they pretended to worship the Lord in truth. This hypocritical mixture of “worship” (in theological terms called “syncretism,” which means worshiping one’s own god along with other gods) was a bold evil. The worship of the Ammonite god, Molech, even involved such inhumane rituals as child sacrifice. God will not tolerate those who claim to be His followers, but at the same time worship false “gods” or give anything priority over Him. By God’s standards, such a false and fake lifestyle is sinful and immoral. Judgment awaits all who claim to serve God but fail to avoid the evil and impure practices that are so common in the world.

AGAINST JUDAH / ZEPHANIAH 1:4

I will also stretch out mine hand upon Judah, and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and I will cut off the remnant of Baal from this place, and the name of the Chemarims with the priests;

AGAINST JUDAH / ZEPHANIAH 1:4

Judah, the people of God in Zephaniah’s day, would soon experience God’s justified anger and judgement for rebelling against the Lord, worshiping other gods (Baal) and engaging in all kinds of violence, corruption and deceit (Zephaniah 1:4-9). This prophecy was most likely spoken to Judah before 621 B.C., since the offenses mentioned were done away with during Josiah’s reforms. Zephaniah’s message probably motivated King Josiah to begin the reforms.

SWEEP AWAY EVERYTHING / ZEPHANIAH 1:2-3

Zephaniah begins by announcing God’s coming judgment on the entire world. His language is suggestive of the warning God sent just before the great flood that once destroyed the earth (Genesis 6), only this time the judgment would be by fire (Zephaniah 1:1; Zephaniah 1:3). Because the majority of people will refuse to turn from their own sinful way and follow the Lord, God has set a time when He will destroy all the wicked, as well as the world itself. It will be a time of extreme devastation, distress, sorrow, regret and ruin.

The word of the Lord which came unto Zephaniah the son of Cushi, the son of Gedaliah, the son of Amariah, the son of Hizkiah, in the days of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah.

ZEPHANIAH / ZEPHANIAH 1:1

Zephaniah prophesied during the reign of Josiah, king of Judah (640-609 B.C.), who was probably his cousin (since Josiah was also a great-great grandson of King Hezekiah). The nation was involved in all kinds of violence and worshiping false gods, and it was spiritually unconcerned toward the true God. Zephaniah’s message to the nation was probably given before the spiritual reform movement led by Josiah. In fact, the prophecies may have been a motivating force behind the king’s call for renewed devotion to God and obedience to His law.

THE RICH MAN AND LAZARUS / LUKE 16:19-31

THE RICH MAN AND LAZARUS / LUKE 16:19-31

The rich man’s life was consumed in self-centered living. He made the wrong choice and suffered eternally (Luke 16:22-23). Lazarus lived all his life in poverty, but his heart was right with God. His name means “God is my help,” and he never gave up his faith in God. He died and was immediately taken to paradise (Luke 16:22; 23:43; Acts 7:59; 2 Corinthians 5:8; Philippians 1:23). Paradise and “Abraham’s side refer to the place of spiritual rest and delight where those who die in a right relationship with God enter His presence and await the resurrection and the fulfillment of all God’s plans (Luke 23:43; 2 Corinthians 12:2, 4, which use “heaven” and “paradis” interchangeably). The word translated “hell” (Greek hades) refers to the place where the wicked dead go to await final judgment. Though hades includes the type of torment described in other passages that refer to hell (Matthew 8:12; Revelation 14:11; Revelation 20:10), it should not be confused with the Greek gehenna (also translated “hell”; Matthew 10:28). Gehenna is the term that actually refers to hell as the place of eternal torment and punishment, originally prepared for the devil and his demonic follower (Matthew 25:41), but also reserved for the ungodly (Mark 9:43; Mark 9:48). The location and proximity of paradise and hades as described in this passage are unclear; it simply points to a permanent separation. Some view Jesus’ description here of the location (not the conditions) of Abraham’s side and hades in a less literal way. The main point is that the destinies of both men were irreversible at death (Luke 16:24-26).
