IMMEASURABLY MORE / EPHESIANS 3:20

God can do so much more than we ask and desire in prayer; His ability exceeds anything we can imagine. This promise is conditional, which means that it depends on the degree of the Holy Spirit’s presence, purpose and power operating in our lives (Ephesians 1:18-21; Ephesians 3:16-19; Isaiah 65:24; John 15:7; Philippians 2:13).

ROOTED AND ESTABLISHED IN LOVE / EPHESIANS 3:17

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Ephesians 3:17

That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,

ROOTED AND ESTABLISHED IN LOVE / EPHESIANS 3:17

“Rooted” (Greek errizomenoi) is a horticultural term (dealing with plants), and “established” is an architectural term (dealing with buildings and structures) meaning “founded.” The follower of Jesus “being rooted” in the revelation of God’s love in Christ is like a plant with deep roots in the soil. “Being established” in his love is like a building with a strong foundation laid on a solid rock. Both metaphors, or word pictures, symbolize a deep relationship as opposed to a shallow relationship. These symbols also convey that revelation of “the love of Christ” (Ephesians 3:18) is necessary for a deep, solid relationship that is expressed in powerful ways for God’s honor Ephesians 3:19-21).

STRENGTHEN … INNER BEING / EPHESIANS 3:16-19

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Ephesians 3:16-19

That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; 17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; 19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.

STRENGTHEN … INNER BEING / EPHESIANS 3:16-19

To be strengthened by the Spirit in the “inner being” is to have our spirits filled with the energy of His life and to have our souls (our motives, desires, feelings, thoughts and purposes) placed more and more under the Spirit’s influence and direction. In the most complete sense, this allows God to show His power through us in greater ways. There are four aspects to the purpose of this spiritual strengthening:

  1. That Christ may establish His presence in our hearts (Ephesians 3:16-17; Romans 8:9-10).
  2. That we may be grounded in sincere love for God, Christ and others.
  3. That we may comprehend with our minds and experience in our lives Christ’s love for us (Ephesians 3:18-19).
  4. That we may be filled with “all the fullness of God” (Ephesians 3:19; and Ephesians 1:23). God’s presence, through the Holy Spirit, should fill and saturate our lives in such a way that we reflect from our innermost being the character and honor of the Lord Jesus Christ (Ephesians 4:13, 15, 224-24).

GOD’S GRACE / EPHESIANS 3:7

The grace of God – undeserved favor and spiritual ability given to accomplish God’s purposes – is an empowering strength that comes from Christ and operates strength that comes from Christ and operates through the Holy Spirit living inside each believer (Ephesians 1:19; 4:7; Acts 6:8; 11:23; 14:26; 1 Corinthians 15:10; 2 Corinthians 12:9; Philippians 2:13; Colossians 1:29; Titus 2:11-13).

MYSTERY OF CHRIST / EPHESIANS 3:4

(KJV) Ephesians 3:4-5

Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ) 5 Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;

MYSTERY OF CHRIST / EPHESIANS 3:4

Paul speaks of the “mystery of Christ,” hidden for ages past in God (Ephesians 3:9) and now made known by revelation (Ephesians 3:3) through the Holy Spirit to the apostles and prophets (Ephesians 3:5). The mystery is God’s purpose to “bring all things in heaven and on earth together under one head, even Christ” (Ephesians 1:10) and to include people of all nations (Ephesians 2:14-17) in the promise of spiritual salvation and eternal life (Ephesians 3:6; Romans 16:25-26; 2 Timothy 1:1). In the Old Testament, it was prophesied that the Gentiles (non-Jews) would turn to the God of Israel and be saved (Romans 15:9-12), so that was not a mystery to those of the New Testament world. But the fact that Gentiles would share equally in the life, promises and purposes of God (Ephesians 3:6) was unexpected by both Jews and Gentiles. It was a mystery that was temporarily hidden until God revealed His full plan of salvation through faith in Christ (Colossians 1:25-26).

WHOEVER WANTS TO BECOME GREAT / MARK 10:43

 But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister: 44 And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all.

WHOEVER WANTS TO BECOME GREAT / MARK 10:43

True greatness is not a matter of leadership, authority, ability or high personal achievement (Mark 10:42). It is an attitude of heart that desires to serve God’s purposes and seeks to benefit others (Philippians 2:3; Philippians 2:5). We must be so committed to God that we pursue His plans and purposes on earth without desiring glory, position or material rewards. Accomplishing God’s purposes, leading others into a personal relationship with Christ and pleasing Him are the greatest rewards for those who are truly great in God’s eyes (Luke 22:24-30).

CAN YOU DRINK THE CUP I DRINK? / MARK 10:38

(KJV) Mark 10:38

But Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask: can ye drink of the cup that I drink of? and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?

CAN YOU DRINK THE CUP I DRINK? / MARK 10:38

This is a Jewish expression meaning to share someone’s fate. In the Old Testament, the cup of wine was a common metaphor, or symbolic reference, to God’s anger and judgment toward human sin and rebellion (Psalms 75:8; Isaiah 51:17-23; Jeremiah 25:15-28; 49:12). That is the reason Christ would suffer in our place – to take the punishment for our sin (Mark 10:36; Isaiah 53:5).

RECEIVE A HUNDRED TIMES / MARK 10:30

(KJV) Mark 10:29-30

And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel’s, 30 But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.

RECEIVE A HUNDRED TIMES / MARK 10:30

The rewards promised here and not to be understood in a literal way. This simply means that God never takes anything from His followers that He does not replace with something infinitely greater according to His purposes. The devoted follower of Christ who sacrifices for the Lord’s sake will experience the blessings and joy related to all the relationships listed here. The fact that these benefits will come with persecutions as well teaches that a life of discipleship (learning from the following Christ) is a combination of promise and persecution, blessing and suffering, grief and glory. But “consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us” (Romans 8:18).
