KNOW THAT YOU ARE MY DISCIPLES / JOHN 13:35

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) John 13:35

By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

KNOW THAT YOU ARE MY DISCIPLES / JOHN 13:35

True godly love (Greek agape) must be the mark of distinction for Christ’s followers (1 John 3:23; 4:7-21). This agape love is basically a self-giving and sacrificial love that seeks and promotes the good of others (1 John 4:9-10). Relationships among Christians must be characterized by this kind of love and devotion. If this type of love is missing, people outside the church will not get an accurate picture of Christ’s love and may see no reason to consider being part of His church. Christians must befriend each other through difficulties, be careful of each other’s feelings and reputations and put aside their own interests in order to promote each other’s welfare (1 Corinthians 13; Galatians 6:2; 1 Thessalonians 4:9; 2 Thessalonians 1:3; 1 Peter 1:22; 2 Peter 1:7; 1 John 3:23).

LOVE ONE ANOTHER / JOHN 13:34

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) John 13:34

A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

LOVE ONE ANOTHER / JOHN 13:34

Christ’s followers are commanded to love each other in a special way, though they may not belong to the same local church or denomination or may not agree on certain issues.

  1. Believers must distinguish true Christians from those who only pretend to follow Jesus by examining their love for and obedience to Christ and their loyalty to God’s Word (John 5:24; 8:31; 10:27; Matthew 7:21; Galatians 1:9).
  2. Any person who has a true and active faith in Jesus Christ and remains loyal to the authority of God’s Word (as revealed by the Holy Spirit through prayer and earnest study of the Bible) is a brother or sister in God’s family. Those who are willing to stand for Christ and resist the popular but ungodly beliefs and behaviors of our day deserve special love and support from one another.
  3. Loving all true Christians, including those outside of our local church or fellowship, does not mean that we must compromise our specific Biblical beliefs or agree totally with their doctrine. While these things should not divide us and prevent us from accomplishing our highest mission of leading others to accept the truth of Christ, we do not necessarily have to agree or come together on all issues of faith and organization.
  4. Christians must never compromise God’s holiness (purity, spiritual integrity and separation from evil) for the sake of a false unity. Loving God and His purposes as revealed in His Word will enable us to show God’s love to others – especially to those who believe differently than we do. Love for God must always be the top priority (Matthew 22:37, 39).

PIECE OF BREAD / JOHN 13:26

Jesus’ giving the piece of bread to Judas would have normally been an act of honor, but perhaps at this time it was a final appeal to turn from his evil plan. Judas, however, refused to change his mind, and Satan took control (John 13:27; Luke 22:3).

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) John 13:22

Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake.

AT A LOSS TO KNOW WHICH OF THEM HE MEANT / JOHN 13:22

It is important to note that prior to Judas’ final act of betrayal, the other disciples never recognized his disloyalty and deceit. He had covered his hypocrisy very well. Even today there will be those in the church who outwardly appear right and sincere, yet inwardly they are not truly faithful and devoted to Christ.

WASH ONE ANOTHER’S FEET / JOHN 13:14

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) John 13:14

If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet.

WASH ONE ANOTHER’S FEET / JOHN 13:14

The early church appears to have followed Jesus’ example and literally obeyed His command to humbly wash one another’s feet. For example, in 1 Timothy 5:10 Paul states that widows would qualify for special care by the church only if they followed certain standards and actions. One of those acts was “washing the feet of the saints.” God’s blessings always depend on putting His Word into practice (John 13:17).

UNLESS I WASH YOU / JOHN 13:8

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) John 13:8

Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.

UNLESS I WASH YOU / JOHN 13:8

These words refer to a spiritual washing which cleanses a person from sin and guilt. Christ’s death on the cross would make this cleansing available for all. How ever, only those who admit their offenses against God, turn from their own way, surrender their lives to Christ and follow God’s purposes for their lives will receive this cleansing. Apart from this washing, no one can truly belong to Christ (1 John 1:7) and experience the life and purpose He has planned for them.

WASH HIS DISCIPLES FEET / JOHN 13:5

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) John 13:5

After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.

WASH HIS DISCIPLES FEET / JOHN 13:5

This dramatic act of foot washing, typically performed by servants, occurred on the last night of Jesus life on earth, Jesus did it

  1. to demonstrate to His disciples how much He loved them;
  2. to foreshadow (symbolically predict) His self-sacrifice on the cross; and
  3. to convey the truth that those who follow Him must humbly serve one another. A desire to be great had continually plagued the disciples (Matthew 18:1-4; 20:20-27; Luke 9:46-48). Christ wanted them to see that the desire to be first – to be superior and honored above others – is exactly the opposite of a Chrislike attitude, which He wanted them to imitate (Luke 22:24-30; John 13:12-17; 1 Peter 5:5).

GOD BLESSED THE SEVENTH DAY / GENESIS 2:3

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Genesis 2:3

And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

GOD BLESSED THE SEVENTH DAY / GENESIS 2:3

God blessed the seventh day (Sabbath) for both physical and spiritual reasons. It is to be a special day of rest and a memorial, or occasion for reflection and praise to Him, for the completion of His created work. God did not rest on the seventh day of creation for His own sake (as if He were tired), but as an example for us to follow. Rest is necessary for our spiritual, physical, mental and emotional well-being. Our Creator provided the Sabbath as a special blessing for His people, to renew and refresh them on a regular basis. He designed it as a day of rest, worship and fellowship with Him. The Sabbath principle is so important that God made it one of the Ten Commandments for those who would become His covenant people (Exodus 20:8-11; Exodus 16:29; 31:12-17; Deuteronomy 5:12-15; Matthew 12:1).

THE GREATEST … IS LOVE / 1 CORINTHIANS 13:13

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Corinthians 13:13

And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

THE GREATEST … IS LOVE / 1 CORINTHIANS 13:13

It is clear from this chapter that God honors Christlike character more than ministry, faith or the possession and use of spiritual gifts.

  1. God values and emphasizes character that acts in love, patience (1 Corinthians 13:4), kindness (1 Corinthians 13:4), unselfishness (1 Corinthians 13:5), hatred for evil and love for the truth (1 Corinthians 13:6), honesty (1 Corinthians 13:6), dependence on God and endurance (1 Corinthians 13:7) much more that extreme faith or great accomplishments in the church ( 1 Corinthians 13:1-2; 1 Corinthians13: 8; 1 Corinthians 13: 13).
  2. The greatest in God’s kingdom will be those who are great in inward character and who show true love for God and people, not necessarily those who are greatest in outward accomplishments (Luke 22:24-30). God’s love within Christ’s followers through the presence of the Holy Spirit is always of greater importance than faith, hope or any other spiritual discipline or character trait (Romans 5:5).

TONGUES, THEY WILL BE STILLED / 1 CORINTHIANS 13:8

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Corinthians 13:8

Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.

TONGUES, THEY WILL BE STILLED / 1 CORINTHIANS 13:8

Spiritual gifts such as prophecy, tongues and knowledge will cease at the end of this age (following Christ’s return to earth and the final defeat of evil; Revelation 20). For now, these gifts represent what is partial or incomplete (1 Corinthians 13:9), but they will unnecessary “when perfection comes” (1 Corinthians 13:10), at the end of history. Then, the believer’s knowledge and character will become perfect in eternity with Christ (1 Corinthians 13:12; 1:7). Until then, we need the Holy Spirit and His gifts in our churches. There is no indication here or anywhere else in Scripture that the work of the Holy Spirit through His gifts would end at the end of the first-century era. The gifts of the Spirit have a place and meaning as much now as in the early church because Christians today need the same power, guidance and encouragement to live for Christ and accomplish His purposes in their generation.
